Spray on sound deadener, how effective is it

Has anyone used spray on sound deadener under the floor pan of a Defender/County. How effective was it, any problems etc etc ???

I think there are water based ones that are solvent resistant. I've heard stories about the Bitumen type deadeners being softened by fuel and getting pretty messy.

While the cab is off my project car it would be easy to roll it over and spray it.

    Cheers, Murray

you could spray the inside with that rhino liner or similar......

the end result is similar to linoleum.....and fuel wont affect it as its on the inside.......

should also work on the outside too i guess.......

    Hi Murray,

I haven't used any myself, but I imagine it would be a noticeable improvement on bare aluminium alone, especially on a 4BD1. Not sure about problems - the only potential issue that came to mind is water retention and corrosion of steel bits (footwells / firewall) - didn't even think about solvents.

If you do decide to do it, I'd be keen to hear your thoughts on effectiveness.

    Cheers

I have used brush-on sound deadener quite a bit in the past. I prefer it as you can get a thicker layer. It works reasonably well, however I have usually used it on new projects rather than existing vehicles, so it is hard to make a before-after comparison.

Not sure about the outside but I would not use it inside. I have seen many a vehicles floors rusted out when it loses its adhesion and moisture, or in the case of a defender water gets between it and the floor.

Murray, if money is no object (haha) I'd consider the Wright Off Road floor mat from the UK.
It's a one piece heavy duty polyurethane sound barrier matt.
    It weighs 25kg.

Last time I enquired it was 400 pounds which was just too much for me, the pound-dollar exchange was a lot worse but according to the company they'd sold few Defender systems to Australia at the time.

I had one on order, gave them my details including credit card details. No charge made against the card and have not heard from them and they don't answer e-mails. I was thinking they may no longer be around.

If you hear from them let us know so I can pursue them again.

    Thanks for the ideas guys,
I'm sure there are more product options out there on top of what's already been mentioned. I'm not in a hurry as it's a future project I'm thinking about, so everything is worth looking into.

Mate, it's been over twelve months since I emailed them.

You could always try ringing. That's how I've had to get bits from companies in the UK and Italy in the past, (race car and mtb) emailing didn't seem to work.
