    Discovery TD5 Turbo Lag

    Hi Guys.

I have just rebuilt my head and everything seems to be fine albeit the turbo lag is just a joke and renders the vehicle unsafe IMO if you need quick response. It works OK once revs are up. I have replaced all the hoses and the Boost Controller. Vacuum hoses to wastegates etc also replaced.

Can someone tell me if I can reduce this lag? I notice on the turbo that there is an adjustable arm and that arm is controlled by the boost controller. Can I "tune" things here?

    Cheers in anticipation.

    Gday
Is the lag worse than before? It it manual?. Yes you can adjust the waste gate rod but even at standard factory settings the lag (in a manual) will still be felt at low RPM. I would be looking at what the turbo is doing. Test the boost pressure. With a Nanocom or with a guage post intercooler and review results. Standard boost is between 15-17psi. In my 04 TD5 manual, it is dead as a doornail until I get around 1200RPM up and then it revs out quickly. I have adjusted my wastegate to produce 18-19 psi at full noise. I have also fitted a boost guage post intercooler (where the EGR used to be). Also check for blocked air filter, delaminated intercooler hoses and blocked intercooler. (oil)!

    Thanks Robot D5

The lag is probably what it was before and it is automatic. The reaction of the turbo system is quite audible as a "woosh". My tacco shows revs going up but response is limited for a short while. She certainly will not pull out from a standing start. She will walk then jog.

Wastegate only controls maximum boost level.
If you have just done the head, I would be looking to see that the injector clearances have been set correctly otherwise fueling will be way down and this will have a significant effect on lag at low revs.

And as above, intercooler hoses etc are the bread and butter checks.

    Regards

    Andrew

Obviously you have not driven a Nissan 3lt Turbo. We have one as a fast attack and you put your foot down and count, I have counted 5 before anything happens, much worse than my Defender and that is in first gear. The thing loses revs so bad it is regular for one of us to stall it.

And that annoying exhaust noise when you lift off between gears.... Drives me nuts in a mates one

I had the same problem, ended up being the air flow meter. Try disconnecting the sensor plug and it will go to a default program. Mine went straight back to what I'd call 'normal' after being really laggy, couple of hundred for a new afm at the next service and it was all good.
