    Gearbox and transfer case

I have Land Rover Defender with a stuffed transfer case(lost the nut for the inermediate shaft and chewed out housing).
    I have a few questions.
Can a 1994 2 door Land Rover Discovery transfer case fit on the back of my gearbox?
Now I had a new(second hand or recondition)gearbox fitted in my Defender, the number 68A is engraved on the gearbox.
Is this gearbox an R380 or LT77?
Or can the gearbox and transfer case from the discovery fit in the Defender?
Or should I buy the right transfer case?
    please help
    Thank You

If reverse is toward you and down, it's R380. 68A is prefix on the serial number for Type A gearbox.

Defender high ratio is 1.4, Disco is 1.2. If you use a Disco transfer box, you'll get better fuel economy (perhaps). The casings are the same.

Disco transfer boxes are cheap, but I'd make sure the transfer gear in the transfer box was in good condition and of the later cross drilled design, and that the o rings on the intermediate shaft are replaced prior to reinstalling. Replace output shaft seal on the rear of the gearbox, and input seal on the front of the transfer box.

disco box is slightly different to defender box, the selector mechanism is brought forward on the defender via a remote gear selector. A V8 disco box will be different in the length of the bell housing and input gear.

Tc as has been covered is different in the high range ratio. If you tow at all you may not enjoy that slightly higher ration particularly on taking off on a slope.
