    smashed diff

I smashed the insides of my diff. Its a 98 disco1 with 24spline. Im after the thoughts of some one who knows all about diffs. Ok i have a complete 1980 rrc rear diff and i was going to put the iners into the disco housing. The disco is a 24 spline and the rangie is a 10. Just after your thoughts. Thanks Mark.B

Er if the diff is smashed inside you will have to buy a new hemisphere and planetary gears anyway. You maybe can use the imperial crown wheel and pinion if they are OK. I suspect there may be a problem with the hole diameter of the crownwheel mounting bolts if you put an imperial crownwheel on a metric carrier. The 80 pinion will have a 4 spline yoke on the front,so if you have to buy a new pinion , you will also have to buy a new yoke ( but they are cheap at about $25)

You can put a 24 spline inside the 80RRC casing but you will need special carrier bearings which have AFAIR from 2 weeks ago, bearings with an outer diameter of 3inches and an inner diameter of 1.75 Inches.

These are not common and will need to be mixed and matched , and so will cost a lot , about in my recent experience $200 or so.
Because of the bolt diameter issue , you may have to also buy a new crownwheel and pinion, but these will fit in an Imperial housing.

I cannot tell you if you can fit an imperial crownwheel on a metric carrier, but if you cannot, you IMHO be better just buying a good second hand diff.
In fact to have a Bitza rebuilt professionally anyway would probably cost more than a second hand diff. You would be looking at $350 plus bearings , seals and yoke based on quotes I got or at least $700 or so.

Im sorry I did'nt make my self clear. I want to put the diff and axles from the 1980 rangie in to the 98 disco. The question is will the whole range rover diff and axles fit straight in to the diff housing on the disco ? and yes I would love to put a locker in BUT i have no cash thats why im trying to do the diff and axle swap to get me by until i get some cash for a 24 spline senter or locker. Thanks

Well Ive got the Axles and diff center out of the Rangie. It all looks like it should bolt straight in. All the nuts and bolts are metric the same as the Disco one. Its exactly the same except for the spider gears one has 24 spline and the other has 10 spline. If my 24 spline spider gears wer'nt damaged I could of swaped them over and ran the 24 spline axles. But I will Just put the 10 spline ones in and see how long thay last

Just be wary of the axle length, as I vaguely remember form long ago that there is a difference in the hub end to diff length between the two axles ie measure the axles against each other.
I beg to differ on the carrier. If is a 1980, the OD of the carrier bearings will be different. The hole in the carrier will be too small for the axle to fit through and not enough meat to machine it safely.
I know you are not serious but just in case someone thinks this is a bright idea for cheap stronger axles.

Forget about using the rover centre, go get yourself a locker of some sort, the stock centre is way to weak if you plan on doing alot of 4x4ing and definetly needs to go if your uping you tyre size. Go and speak to Wortho at oposite lock newcastle(new shop at Islington) he should be able to help you out.

Not easily, but the whole housing will swap, just need rear rangie shaft
