    Question about body filler

    Guys

    When prepping a panel for body filler which I'm going to have to do on my series doors.

    is it necessary to take the dent back to metal before filling? or can the surface just be roughed up to give the filler something to stick too.

    If this is the case what would I rough it up with 80gritt some thing like that?

    and then what would I take it back with? 180 perhaps? I will be using an orbital sander for the main part but can hand sand with finer paper if needed.

    looking at making a start on the doors in the next couple of days

    Body filler needs to go on bare metal. The metal should be roughened up with a coarse grade paper too.

    Stopper can go on paint but that's a finishing filler (for small imperfections).

    So how coarse?

    not sure what to take the paint off with really as I bought paint stripper and I thought it was crap...nearing in mind the doors are ali.

    A flapper wheel perhaps
    Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    40/60 grade would be fine.

    Get some decent paint stripper - some is good, most are crap. It's been 10 years since I've used it though so I can't tell you what's good or not these days . Get the one with the most hazard warnings on it .

    The filler needs something to bite onto so the rougher the metal, the better.

    ok I will get some 40 tomorrow...so basically strip it backk to metal then rough up the metal for filler to stick.

    sand back the filler till its flat, skim it ( i think there is some sort of third step filler I need to use) and then sand back again with much finer paper, prime and then paint.

    does that sort of sound right? am I on the right track?

    It depends on how good a finish you're after.

    You can apply filler, sand it back finishing with about 360 dry then apply primer & a guide coat. Rub back with say 600 wet & see if there's any low spots.
    Hopefully there will just be a couple of very shallow lows & these can be filled with stopper (which can go onto the paint).

    Have you read that guide I lent you? All this should be covered in there IIRC.

    no never read the filler bit just the paint bit...I will have to get it out again.
    I didn't need to learn about filler as I thought I had bloody good doors to put on.

    until I actually went o fit them..hahahahaah
