    Poor idle, running rich.

My 3.9 smells as if it is running rich, and blows a small amount of black smoke. This car has always been economical, for a heavy V8, but of late is has been using a little more fuel. At times it will idle smothly, yet at other times the idle will fluctuate between 400 and 1,000 rpm and sometimes stalls. The spark is good, plugs, leads, cap and rotor have been recently replaced along with the full recon of the heads. The air filter is clean.
Does the computer, ecu thingy control the mixture via the MAS, or is there a mixture adjustment somewhere? Could the MAS be dodgey? The fault is intermittent and usually disappears if the air-con is turned on.

I beleive that the IAC valve on the back of the plenum chamber is the problem, first check to see that the rubber hoses are connected and/or not split, also check that the 3 allen head bolts are tight.
If all that checks out , remove the IAC valve and clean soot and crap off the valve plunger and the valve body and where it seats in the plenum (use Throttle body cleaner).
Still no joy get some Throttle Body cleaner and clean the "Hotwire" which is accessed through a small hole in the top left hand corner, also remove the MAF plug and spray some contact cleaner on the pins, get a small thin screwdriver and very gently prise the pins open and reconnect plug and pull it out a few times to clean the pins and sockets, hope that gets you going again, Regards Frank.

dont forget to check the 2 temp senders on the front of the engine and the actuation of the fuel pressure regulator.

If the regulator is jammed at the full pressure position you'll run rich.

poor idle control is almost certainly, as previously mentioned) the IAC.
