TD5 cat and centre muffler removal

    Gday all.
I am thinking about removing the cat converter and centre muffler from my '04 TD5 Disco and replace it with a straight thru pipe to improve performance. Firstly, is this legal? Secondly, will the noise drive me crazy?
    Cheers
    Robbo.

Did my 2001 TD5 Def I like the note.

As to legal in NSW you could be required if you were really unlucky to be picked up to prove the emission level was legal..

Never seen or heard of anyone actually be picked up on it even at rego time (NSW)

Have a ride in somebody elses first that has done it.
I have done the same to my D2,its significantly louder, sounds good.
I wouldnt do it to our TD5 Defender without riding in one first, they are noisy enough at highway speeds.

If you do it and are concerned about noise use some exhaust wrap keeps the noise down and also the heat.

A lot easier to do on the exhaust while the pipes are on the bench,

I've done both my 90 and my 130, and the noise difference in the cabin is almost unchanged. You can hear a bit of whistle when the turbo spins up but nothing intrusive. With all the other noises in a Defender, I think you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference.

In NSW the cost if found to remove a Cat. used to be $5,000 for an individual, and $20,000 for a company. And I know of a few people that have been caught, mainly by roadside checks by RTA and/or Police.
