I know (thanks Baz) a suitably tweaked TD5 is awesome and when released was 10 years ahead of its time as a 4wd engine..

It ran well under the backstop of warranty, but, I think, suffers due to private ownership,,

I have one of each.
Yes, the V8 is far better off the line but my RRC weighs less than the D2 TD5.
Yes, the V8 gives it a feel of being more luxurious and SWMBO even feels more "safe and secure" in the RRC when offroad.

The torque convertor in the D2 is a little sloppy until it locks up. Once it's does it goes quite well considering it's carrying more weight than the RRC by a good 200odd kg's and it's not been chipped yet.
My "ideal" D2 is a Midnight Blue SE V8 but just couldn't find one.
I wanted a manual but finding a D2a with a 5 speed in an upspec was impossible.

Considering this is the first non V8 i have had since I was 20, it was a milestone for me to look at other options but the deal was I got to keep the Rangie. The TD5 was purely a running costs thing as my to-fro work fuel costs were in the vicinity of $200+ a week. Now I wouldn't use more than $150 over two weeks including weekends.

So really I have the best of both worlds and can satify both vices while having equal gripes on both. If I chuck a sad at one, I can smooch up to the other until we have a spat then I'm back in love with the other again

The Rangie will always be my favourite and will satisfy my desires for years to come but on the long trips towing and general day to day use, the D2 is the proverbial workhorse as I really do love it but I don't have the passion for it like i do the Rangie. I would just as quickly have a deefa and very nearly did in place of the D2 but it needs the D2 driveline and tuning to really make me feel at home in it.

At the moment I can't justify LPG in any form on the RRC as it just doesn't work for what I use it for due to the gas tank location an the lack of range. If an LPG injected D2 V8 came up I would actual look at it but still think the viability of space for me personally would force me to pass it in.
But everyone's different and each to their own when choosing a ride particularly if it's a passion you have. Settling for second best will only leave you broken hearted and regretful.
