    Hayman Reese Towbars

The tongue to fit my towbar is too long. I can cut the length down and redrill the hole for the pin however is there any regulation relating to the distance from this hole to the back end of the tongue? I cannot fit the next shortest tongue because it is too short to clear the car body. Jim

    Hi Jim,

You have not provided any detail on the measurements you currently have, and what you are after, or can actually fit. Are you trying to shorten a 50mm tube lug, or a solid 50mm lug. The tube lugs are risky to shorten by comparison to the solid steel lugs. A better option is to buy a new suitable lug.

Hayman Reese make a large assortment of different lugs. Unfortunately they don't seem to have the drawings for these on their website. If you can locate your nearest HR agent, they should have drawings including measurements of all available lugs. I would be surprised if you cannot find something suitable out of the available lugs.

What do you mean by "too long".
Do you mean that the square hitch sticks out of the receiver too far?

I had this problem with my RRC on a Disco1/RRC Hayman Reese towbar, so I redrilled the hole further out so that the flange rested hard up against the towbar.

This provided more length of engagement inside the towbar so is stronger, and bought the trailer closer to the rear axle.It also makes the trailer easier to hitch as you can pull the hitch out to meet the trailer then reverse on to it until it bottoms, then reinsert the pin.

I believe that they made the D1 hitch longer to clear the bumper.
