    Slave cylinder probs... td5 defender

    Hi Guys

I have just replaced my slave cylinder, and on taking it out the black plastic clip that holds the rod in broke off (it was very worn) I can get the cylinder on and have the rod located... correctly with an amount of spring pressure holding it in place... problem is... will it survive like this?

If i need to get a new clip... how the hell do i get it back on? it doesnt look like an easy job

Anyone else faced this issue? if so... what did you end up doing?

    Thanks

    Steve

Don't worry, it is under significant pressure and will not fall out. I have had/ seen this issue before, no problems have arisen from any of them.

read the deep level maintentance manuals and the clips are only an aid to assembly, they're plastic so that if they come out during assembly and get stuck in the bellhousing they wont damage anything if the flywheel or clutch picks them up.

    Thanks Guys

I'll take it back out... grease it up and put it back... and wait for it to blow through the fork!

I'll carry on.... so much to do...

Don't worry Steve, the Td5 has a solid cast fork like the V8's with 4 and 5 spd. No worries in that department. Goodness knows WHY the Tdi models ran a useless pressed 'tin' one...

    Hi Mate

Its really not that bad... if you havent done one.. which i hadnt.. mine was leaking in the same way...

Undo the cover plates... undo the pipe making sure you mop up.. peel the inside flooring back and undo the 6 bolts ensuring you twist yourself upside down and round and round trying to do it.. short spanners can help (bunnies sell some gripwell CV ones for about $12 that work well) pull the whole pedal assembly out change the cylinder and reverse the process... may help to take the expansion tank out too.... if you can afford to lose the coolant (mine was empty)

Slave is 2 bolts (that were bloody tight!) and cracking the pipe just REMEMBER not to pull the push rod out of the bellhousing. it will be stuck in the slave use LN pliers to release it out of the slave, reverse to put it back in... oh and get frustrated cause you cant get your hands in to get to anything! I did the bottom bolt from below, upper from above (all heatsheild turbo pipes etc were off..)

oh and bleeding i found real easy! i got some flexi retic pipe and got it to fit the bleed nipple.. fold the end over and cable tie (to block it) cut a slit in the pipe (fine slit acts as a 1 way valve) and then use a jar with fluid in already... pump and fill pump and fill.. all good... no extra air that i know of.. and costs next to nothing

I think all up if i were to do it again it would be a couple of hours... and i dont rush

Nearly running again! i'm getting quite excited about running the bigger intercooler...
