More on how to tell a crook fan VC

Here is a new one next to an old but servicable one.
You will note the oil ( or silicone) leak from the old one around the spring.
To fail they have to leak either out the front seal or the rear seal.

The old one was given to me as not cooling a 300Tdi but OK for a V8. I have replaced it as I now plan to fit it for a Cape York trip. I paid extra from Britparts for an OEM .

This photo comes out as the same size when clicked on my computer. Does it come out bigger to other viewers? And if not how do you get it to be big?

To get a larger image size in a thread i've found I have to use an outside image source as the forum software automatically resizes it if stored here.

When i clicked on the image it came out OK

PA, click on the small photo to make it bigger.

Now copy this bigger photo's URL & then paste it between .

That is my whole point!!!!LOL
When it is my post , the photo does NOT open any bigger in the separate window, it just opens as the same size in the top LH corner of the new window.

Now that I know that this seems to be normal and everyone else sees it normal size I am relatively happy.

If the fan does not roar when a cold engine first starts, its a good sign the VC needs replacing. I bought a new one and it did not roar so I complained to the seller (in UK) who sent me another. The replacement Britpart one was ok.

Even stuffed one's will roar at cold start up, because the fluid has settled,
It's when they get hot and theres not enough fluid in the chamber to cause friction to engauge,
The fluid leaks out the front at the heat coil, just enough leaks out for it not to work at temp.

Im using a ford one, more than happy with it, if i hold the engine revs at a constant say 2000RPM at normal temp, the fan will slip until the fan catchs up to the engine speed and you then hear the fan roaring,
works like a slipping clutch,
This is in netural of course, thats how i know my VC is working
Again, when the weather is hot, and your engine has been working or idle in traffic, and you never hear that fan roaring, it's probably stuffed, or you need a hearing check!!

As someone else has said, if the VC isn't working, you probably need your radiator rodding as well, I have a theory that blocked up hot raditors help start the process of ruining the VC

I replaced my VC after the car got a bit hot when towing up a hill. The new coupling never seems to roar on cold start-up but I can hear it roar above the noise of the engine when it engages on the road,

Cheers Charlie
