cleaning a 300Tdi engine breather - what with?

    Hi all

Just doing some maintenance on my 1998 Defender 300Tdi and I was wondering what is the best cleaning fuild to use to flush out the engine breather filter? The book states "use a suitable flushing solvent".

Do I take this to mean turps? diesel? thinners?

    Thanks

I've found that diesel or kerosene works well to clean out the intercooler, so it should work work well for the breather too.
Just make sure you get it all out of the breather by washing with hot water afterwards so that you dont have extra "fuel" going into the intake on your next startup.

I've assumed (possibly incorrectly) that the "filter" that 86Mud was referring to is the black plastic crankcase breather unit that is on the RH side of the head above the lift pump.
In which case the 300tdi Disco is the same.

If thats not the unit then the defender must have something different from the Disco that I'm not aware of (I have a D1 300tdi).

I think you have assumed correctly.

The Rave cd says to replace the rubber o ring as well - where have people sourced these?

Correct - Black canister on right hand side of head.

Rubber o'ring is part no LL0100000..well that is the number on the packet that I have, which has a genuine landrover sticker with Made in Germany stamped on it!

I sourced my o ring from British Offroad in Queensland.

Well, that's my job for tonight....

Pictures below. Last pic shows the dirt that came out of it - surprisingly not much really.

    Cheers
