    disco starting/earth

had issues with 93 disco since i bought it.3.5 EFI V8 auto.
last owner replaced lots of bits.

not long after i got it the new starter fell out.i used a p76 9/16 headed bolt to refit it.the fuel economy isnt consistant, sometimes 10km/l-other times 4km/l.

last few months the temp gauge runs high and the over heat trans light flashes,it goes off if i select 3rd.the heater core died and pumped coolant into the cab-ive looped the pipes-i havnt got around to replacing the T/stat yet but the gauge takes longer to get hot.

you can hold the top hose radiator and gearbox when the temp shows 95%.I replaced both sencors but no change.the dash warning lights often dont work so i havnt bothered to search for a problem.

the headlights have been coming on when cold starting, and the starter fell out this morning.

the earth lead is conected to the starter bolt with the allen head.what it the thread?
is there an issue with replacment starter not fitting-with the p76 you often have to fit and dowl the starter with the gearbox out?

I going to run another earth lead from the alternator to the chasis.ive been carting a second battery and thinking to set up a main battery in the rear.

    refitted the startermotor.
with a 550 cca battery it spins over very fast.

but it wouldnt start untill the battery was almost flat.but restarts every time.

this morning it just wound over with steam vapour commonig out the tail pipe.
I removed the cap to check for moisture and check for spark.
it then stated.it restarts every time.hugh black soot patch on the ground-like a black oil.

i was thinking does it need to have the battery disconected to rest a memory?

rip the plugs out now and clean/check-they are about 8K old.

regaped plugs with hose clamp[as you do].

cranked over hard now.so i checked firing order timing etc.

i played with the mixture adjustment on the afm but only changes a little.
the engine temp shows a lot colder due to the earth conection so i get a Tstat today.im guessing the engine needs to be hot to adjust the CO.

rover started first hit this morning an wifes gone on a short trip to school with it.tommorrows back to work at 6:am that will be a test.

missed and shook in top gear.not good.

played with the afm and it didnt alter tune as i thought it should.

i unplugged the tps and it reved hard.screwing the afm it dropped to an idle.reconected the tps and drives ok.

the car ran ok for a few km.

yesterbay i unpluged and tested the temp sender.
it now runs fine without the sender conected.at the end of a trip it revs high.

this is the second sencor since august.

broke the bonnet release handle and called it a day.

    fitted a 88 T/stat from landrover.originally had a 92.
the temp gauge now runs at half.

has a missfire under load like a spark issue when cold.
by load i mean anything above idle.by selecting low gears and reving it runs fine.has black smoke sometimes that sugests flooding-at the same time i get pinking.

when the engine warms up it runs fine.

this fuel tank milage was 4.8Km/L.

the adjustment on the afm ony changes the tune if i have the TPS disconected and the coolant is hot.

a bit of a turn and the the car wont acelerate missing and pinking then turn the other way it blows smoke.

next on the list of things to do is fit a hotter set of plugs and test/replace the coil.

Disco ran fine for a few days and got 200KM on half tank, then started to pink and blow black smoke.got very bad with no power.starts first hit of the key.

i adjusted the AFM in gear[auto] with chocks and reving about 2000RPM.
I adjusted untill the misfire disapeared.

now has lots of go,there is a knocking noise coming up through the intake manifold at different rpm loads thats strong enough to feel.im thinking piston skirts.

the 10kms per litre???????, wow, that's pretty good for a V8, thats 10 litres per 100 kms, others are only getting 18-20 litres per 100 kms. You are getting TDi figures
are you sure on the consumption?

ide panic if i got 20l/100.
even from an auto.i live in a rural area with winding 90km/h roads,
hardest part is 1/4 trip running cold.

this car got 300K but the plugs are clean
Im told the 3.9 a lot better than 10KM/L.

neighbours mostly get 12K/l+ from diesel untill you tow or run at 110kmh

Ummmmm... Start panicking?! 4.8km/L as you previously mentioned is about 21L/100! You said 4km/L earlier, that's even worse - 25L/100km...

    Am I missing something?
