 D2 Auto Trans Issue

Hi can anyone help with a diagnosis , my 2000 D2 V8i auto trans overheat light is coming on when 1. sand driving at low speeds, now it seems to be coming on in hilly country in High and Low, within 15 minutes despite cool days and minimal effort. It has never given me grief like this and there was no load, no more then ususal ( racks, bars, sliders, fridge etc)

I have had sensor replaced, oil replaced and gaskets all replaced. When I start highway or normal street driving no issue, ever not even on long trips (400km).

I was going to add a secondary trans cooler in the grill, (after recent Stockton troubles) however todays overheat makes me think that I may have bigger issues, it was only 15 minutes into some Nowra tracks.

Was thinking with maybe an electrical test required and then maybe taking it to a trans specialist in Sydney ...somewhere in the shire. Can someone help Im tired of having to head home when the boys are all out playing.

The vehcile has had nearly every component replaced over the past 5 years , suspension, engine, cooling, etc, trans is the only thing that effects my trips and the only thing not looked at closely. Maybe someone could suggest an order of process illimination to save in mechanic cost etc.

Cheers
Rod

It sounds like it is still driving ok from what you say.
No shudder, poor shifts etc?
Is it actually hot?
Fluid level OK?
I find a simple hobby temperature probe pretty handy for these things $20-30 or a multi meter with temp probe feature on it.
Check your wiring harness/conectors to the temp sender you may have damaged it while off rd.

Driving like a dream, on and off road. Sensor has been replaced, maybe need to check wires and then if ok will take advice and test temp.

Do you test in similar off roads situations or can it be done anytime?

Correction to my last, the over heat did come on before driving around the city however has not occurred in 6 months since the sensor was replaced. But now only in sand and today in high range hills. Once rested 10 minutes will go for another 15 minutes before the light comes on again.

Thanks for your reply mate.

Could it be low on oil? I was surprised it should be filled while running. Mine took a litre or tw extra when filled this way.

Thanks, has been filled and serviced with a new sensor and we also did the gaskets, and its not leaking, saying that, wpuldnet the light come on and stay on if it were low enough to trigger a warning light, this issue has been going on off and on now for 6 months, albeit less with the new sensor fitted, now only off road.

Thanks anyway.

Is there a second sensor on the transfer case?
My RRC 92 has one sensor in the cooler line and one on the BW on the same circuit. If it has a second on the LT230, it may be crook.

					Hi Rod,
IIRC the D2 has a fairly substantial trans cooler across the base of the radiator (separate from radiator though).
Not knowing what sort of bar you have fitted you may have an airflow problem through the cooler that wasn't there with the original front end.
It sounds to me (untrained though I am) to be a flow (either air or fluid) issue. If trans is operating correctly but getting hot sooner then the fluids aren't moving and/or cooling as quickly as they should. Yep, I know, kinda obvious. When you do long runs you get good air flow through the trans cooler. When running in low range there is significantly less air flow through the cooler. So you can tend to see what you describe. Problems in country where speed is minimal and not when speed is much higher/more consistent.
Hoses/pipes - could have been crimped by an inadvertent clout somewhere offroad. I'm fairly sure they are routed high inside most of chassis so this is hard but not impossible to do.
Trans Cooler - may have taken a strike from something along the way and now has restricted flow. Tough to stop flow completely unless it has suffered a crimped feedline at either end. Usually a strike will cause it to hemorrhage fluids anyway. Are the fins on the cooler clogged with anything like mud? If air is not flowing through it then it won't be able to radiate the heat from the fluid.
Other than this it sounds like the fluid is not being circulated around the system.
I'm on the side of the earlier suggestion to test the actual temp. Do it in a few places around the system. At the trans, near the inlet to the cooler, near the outlet from the cooler, and such. See if there are obvious anomalies. If the trans is hot but nothing else in the system is then you have a flow problem. If things come out of the trans cooler well, umm, cooler then you have flow and an effective cooler.
Don't have access currently to my D2 stuff so I can't advise on operating temp ranges and such but others here may be able to help with that.
I'd check your fluid level anyway because .....
Don't expect to get any warning on low fluid levels. A few years back my D2 bled pretty pink fluid all over the Sydney Harbour Tunnel as it came to a complete halt. In peak hour traffic
. No fancy lights on the dash. The only warning was a couple of slurred gear changes on the run into the tunnel. The root cause? One of the feed lines ruptured at a joiner. Incorrectly fastened during servicing and had vibrated loose. So much for quality care at the stealerships
.
Sorry, still feel the pain of that one and had to vent.
So happy diagnosing and may the prognosis be good.
Cheers,
Iain

Check the viscous coupling on your fan as well.
Possibly as said in previous post the cooler fins are blocked up.
