TD5 manual gearbox/transmission
I'm only new to the forum. Hope someone can help and advise me what the problem maybe. I have a 1999 D2 5 speed manual it has developed a grind when changing gears from 5th back to 4th this is very noticeable, there is also a slight grind somethings when changing from 3rd to 4th also. I have just changed the oil in the gearbox "what a job someone had destroyed the filler plug and couldn't get the right torx key in it" well anyway this hasn't fixed the grind. A mate told me to put an additive in with the oil so I used a Lucas oil manual transmission product. Can someone help.

These Gboxes do not take diff oil EP90 or 85W140, they need a lighter gear oil like Penrite 70W-75.
what sort of gear oil did you use?

The oil I used was the Penrite 70W-75, but I put the Lucas oil additive (700ml) with it. The additive was quite thick.

Welcome,
You dont say how many kms, however my money is on synchro rings.
Gearbox apart and new bearings while you are at it. Reco or new are also options. If you are capable a kit will set you back around $600 plus your time and any other components that need to be replaced, which could be nothing but synchros and bearings, to everything, depending on kms and service history. Reco R380 around $1700 plus fitting and new R380 $2700 plus fitting.
A few variables here I know, but would suggest you will be looking at a reco as a minimum.
Additives do not stop grinding gears, they may assist with shifting smoothly in some instances, however, if using the correct grade oil and experiencing grinding, additives are really an attempt to mask failing components.
Since you dont have symptoms with all gears you can rule out clutch issues, though plan on changing that when you deal with the box.
cheers

It's only done 178,000kms (would they wear in that distance) and I babied it since I brought in 2003. I haven't even had it off road it's sits in the garage gathering dust most of the time. I bearly do 5,000kms a year in it. Any other comments/ideas would be appreciated
Thanks for the reply.
Cheers
Benno

R380 and a 2 + tonne vehicle does mean some wear. I have an earlier MY95 Defender and have had a few problems resulting in two recons. The first issue you will not have to worry about was the spline wear on output of G box which has been overcome by drilled input gear into the transfer case for better lube. Second was total destruction of input gear and laygear. Now I have plenty of noises, my current mechanic says that the Gbox talks to you when you drive the vehicle. My defender has only done 157k, some of the earlier k's had it towing a boat or caravan on a few occassions. I'll be sourcing another box to change into the vehicle when the noise gets too bad.
There is bound to be someone that will get on and tell you if you had been using ATF you could expect to get another million miles out of it. I find that a little difficult to believe.
