Thread: What did you do on your Landy today?

    Remember to rust proof the bolts in the front footwells which hold the floor to the firewall before you cover them as the water tends to pool there and cause the bolts to rust, spreading into the floor.
    I also recommend you do the transmission tunnel and under the seats. I also did the underneath of the bonnet.
    Future plans include the wheel wells.
    I wondered if doing the doors was a good idea as the insulation could get wet and stay wet, causing rust.
    I have heard that doing the underside of the roof can make the vehicle significantly cooler, but of course it means removing and refitting the roof lining and it can be difficult to get a good finish, so I've deferred that idea.

    Firewall prep underway for acoustic and thermal insulation. That is a good point regarding the floor bolts and moisture, I have some surface rust already forming and minor corrosion on some bolts.....I don't plan to Dynamat permanently over anything needed to disassemble the truck. For a thermal barrier on the floor I am considering a layer of this;
    Dynamat.com | DynaDeck for Automotive and Restoration
    I'm paranoid about creating an environment for rust to propagate.

    After the Dynamat goes down every surface will probably get a 6mm layer of the Carbuilders adhesive thermal barrier. The roof has some cheap lightweight foam already in it, but it will get stripped for some thicker, high density 'fit for purpose' product. The fabric on the hood liner is starting to separate from the cardboard backing so I will be looking at either repairing it or replacing the whole shebang with a textured adhesive foam. This would make everything a whole lot easier as I will be installing an aircon unit in the rear centre section of the roof.

    The gear I use in the doors doesn’t hold moisture What did you do on your Landy today?

    I’ve done the roof as well at this stage, the floor area is next as the seats etc all come out rendering it undriveable until completion!

    Well, today I took the plates off the 2a - taking them in to town tomorrow, hopefully to swap them for a pair with some paint on them. (They told me they would be there a fortnight ago, but when I took the plates in "you were misinformed, they never take less than three weeks")

    Is it worthwhile giving them a quick call first John?

    I'll leave for town before they open. And in any case, I'm not sure there is such a thing as a "quick" call to RMS, or, indeed whether you can call a specific office (actually it is Service NSW, not RMS).

    They'll send me a letter when they get them, but it will probably take at least a week to get to me.

    The insulation I used came from Car Builders and was called 4WD Insulation because it is waterproof so it doesn't sit there soaking wet and cause rust. Just pull it up and the water is lying underneath but the insulation itself is dry except for surface water. Is Dynamat waterproof?

    Picked up the new plates for the 2a this morning, and fitted them this afternoon - got home after lunch.

    Put the AULRO stickers on the plates to go in the TAC plate holders - starting to prepare for Cooma.
