Today I pulled out my rear diff containing the arb air locker and replaced it with a "braced" diff containing a MaxiDrive locker and HD axles :D
...arb diff is for sale in the markets section if anyone here wants to upgrade their landy ;)
Wow Rosscoe,, that's a pretty handy price of work. Looks good.
Me, today,,, I'm packing the car for a road trip down the coast. Can't wait.
Here fishy fishy fishy :D
Took the Deafener salt water fishing down to Bateman's Bay via the Clyde.
Discovered that the "advisory" speed signs are specifically written for Deafeners and one needs to actually drive the thing around corners. Perhaps I've been too spoilt?
However, find a changing line, and/or a "lurch" a little unsettling.
What I find a bit perplexing is that the suspension is essentially the same as my 83 Rangie and the D1. I don't ever recall that those had too much trouble "pointing"
My D2 was a different kettle of fish. For it's size and weight, and while not necessarily comparable, for what I did with it, it was as driveable as both my BMW and the MX5, in the "horses for courses" stakes.
As a boat tow vehicle the D2 was superb. I find the Deafener a little wanting, though both don't seem to know that the boat is on the back.
Obviously, Defenders are not Rangies but has anyone in here done any "handling" mods rather than "off road" mods, and ones that do not affect the out of show room off road capability?
Comments???
Cheers

Unless you can convince Kinetic to build you a suspension system it's either off road ability or on road composure, take your pick.
A Deefers ride height is higher than a Disco or RRC and as we all know, CofG plays a significant factor on road holding and particularly steering response. Small things like the front radius arm bushes have more compliance than the 'car' (RRC and D1) ones.
BTW, which wheelbase ? The longer the wheelbase, the more 'composed' or stable but the slower the response as the rate of longitudinal load transfer reduces.
Does your Deefer have anti-roll bars ?
ARB's have a significant impact on steering response and transitions, as does low speed damper valving and roll centre difference, front to rear. (the rear is pretty much fixed by the ball joint position, but as you raise the front ride height the panhard rod height also increases, reducing the roll axis inclination and front end grip during the roll transition into a corner.
The bigger tyres on the Deefer also have taller sidewalls reducing response and increasing slop and lurch.
Check the front toe, 0mm won't point anywhere near as well as 2mm toe out, and on it goes.
Drop the ride height, add some 18" or 20" rims and appropriate tyres, add some stiffly valved Billies or Koni's, maybe up the ARB stiffness or just install Disco triple shell radius arm/diff bushes and the Deefer might go around corners.
Or you could just jump in the MX5 and leave the Deefer alone, or buy a D4 or RRS ;)
Or just lift the right foot a millimeter or two!
Cheers, Mick.

:D 300 tdi defender ute converted to auto. ;) Checked cooling system, flushed engine and radiator, new thermostat and realised viscous fan was knackered. Fitted up a twin electric fans from a commodore from a mate. Did it make a difference WOW at idle with one fan supporting the aircon fan. the aircon was freezing cold at idle for the first time in its life. I have not wired in the second fan which will be switch and temp operated for the main cooling side of things
"Composure" that was the word I was looking for :)
110" Deefer definitely not "composed". Did say been "spoilt". Will just have to adjust the driver, rather than the vehicle.
Did spot D3/4 with its van "dead" and being loaded on a towie, coming up the Clyde 36C+. Tough pull on a hot day. Recall I recovered a friends van from the coast when the D2 was new, and on a hot day. Went up piece of wee wee but xmission temp light still came on at the top, had to wait for five. Reckon they all need bigger coolers and more fluid if dragging vans.
....................and as a by the by ...............Puma aircon is "cool". Now all I have to do is get rid of the heat in my footwell and under my seat..................and as I am discovering, insulate the ventilation ducting in the engine bay - unconditioned air is much hotter than OAT.
