How much difference is there between the 101 and Stage 1 inlet manifold?
I have a stage 1 manifold Iains welcome to if he would like to modify that one without mucking up the 101 manifold.
Based on comments on the UK 101 site there are no issues with the standard manifold on the 4.6. It would be nice to ditch the 101 exhaust manifolds and use the P38 ones but there is a bit of mucking around including cutting a bit out of the passenger side chassis to get them to fit.
Sure the carbied 4.6 does not produce the power of the injected version but it still produces a lot more power and torque than the 3.5 even with the 3.5 inlet and exhaust manifolds.
On the 101 the gearing provides enough oomph low down, it is in the mid to higher ranges that more go is needed as on the road the 101 is flat to the floor driving. The 4.6 provides the torque to make onroad driving a lot more flexible - not necessarily a lot faster at the top end but will hold speed on hills etc.

I don't think any modifications to manifolds are needed - as I understand (and please correct me if I am wrong) the 101 manifold will go straight onto the 4.6. As far as I am aware all the 3.5 carbie manifolds are basically the same irrespective of what car they came off.
What am I missing here??

Stage one inlet manifold will not clear the engine cover/gearshift and the 101 inlet manifold will most likely flow more air anyhow.
I m thinking the standard carbys with the standard 101 factory jets and needles may not be too much off the mark as the bigger jugs are going to drag the fuel though the carby anyhow by breathing abit harder though the carby.
Aimost all 101s have had the jets changed from factory specs to early range rover as the 101 was set up to work hard as a gun tractor on MT80 fuel and the standard jets were very much on the rich side for civie use.

Isn't the 4.6 and 3.5 blocks the same height? Even if different the gear lever goes between the carbies so there should be plenty of room. The issue is if the fuel injection system is used. Will still fit under the engine cover (just) but a new gear lever linking rod needs to be made that goes around the side of the plenum.

Yes the 3.5, 3.9, 4.0 and 4.6 Rover engines are all the same height and width.

Thanks - then in that case it is as Iain is thinking - move the 3.5 inlet manifold, CD carbs, and exhaust manifolds over to the 4.6 - rejet/needle the carbs to suit the 4.6.
The actual issues are at the front of the engine - change from serpentine to V belts ???? Change the timing cover ?????? Change oil pump ????? Did the 4.6 have a dizzy??? If not how to provide ignition ???? Do you want the oil filter back in the old 3.5 101 position etc etc etc.
As you are installing a new engine do you put a passenger side engine mount on the drivers side to lower the engine on the drivers side to minimise the 101 rumble.

have done, need to put it back in and make it work(good luck )
after talking to a mechanic mate i am going to leave original carby settings
and see what happens, if not so good will look into jet change , not a racing landy![]()
