    Propshaft problem

    Hi All

    I have a series 3 lwb that I am rebuilding from the ground up using 2 vehicles.

    After rebuilding the leaf springs and prop shafts, gearbox and engine etc the rear propshaft is too long.

    I am wondering if anyone has any ideas.

    There is no weight on the rear end at the moment and the rear springs look quite arched. Will weight lengthen the rear diff to help the prop shaft fit.

    Of the two vehicles, would one have been a six cylinder and the other a 4 cylinder?

    That's the most logical answer- since the 6 is a longer engine, the gearbox/TC is set back a couple of inches = shorter propshaft. Different engine mounts, same gearbox mount, adaptor plate bolts onto the gearbox in the 6.

    The changes with the springs under load is reflected in the sliding joint of the propshaft.

    I agree with Langy - the most likely is that you are trying to fit a four cylinder prop shaft to a six cylinder gearbox position, but there is another possibility. The lwb Series 2a had Rover rear axles, but the Series 3 has a salisbury one - and the nose of the diff is longer. So if trying to fit a prop shaft for a 2a to a 3, it will be too long.

    But if it is the correct prop shaft it will fit with springs completely unloaded without any problem.

    Thanks for the replies.

    Checked measurements again today.

    Diff is same,springs are the same but the diff is definitely sitting too far forward.

    I guess the only thing allowing the diff to sit forward would be the spring length.

    I have rebuilt the springs keeping left and right separate.

    I have a mate with a series 3 I will check off on the weekend and report in. Many thanks.

    Shouldn't be, Series springs have the diff in the centre so they should be able to go either way round.

    Hi John

    Have you still got the other prop shaft just compare the tube length or measure the same and post that measurement on here.

    Have you seated the holes in the axle housing correctly over the centre bolts?

    I'm fairly sure I used the old one and rebuilt it.

    Spring length from centre to each end is the same distance.

    At the moment there is nothing on the chassis to put weight on the springs and try to straighten them.

    Maybe the curve is too great with out weight on the springs. Still you would think there would be enough give in the prop shaft moving in and out to compensate for this.

    Didn't get up there on the weekend but will report in tomorrow on what I have found.
