when i did the 10psi i put pressure up the send line and blocked off the return line, then crawled under the car to look for leaks
when i did the high pressure i isolated each line at the pump end and ran the pressure up from the tank end one at a time, so absolutely nothing happened. in hindsight the pressure was very excessive (somewhat stupid in fact).

well, this has turned out to be a comedy of errors.
i blew back the lines with no issues. but when i went to re prime the system there was now a very small stream of air bubbles at the fuel filter, that would not go away, and the occasional pulse of a large mass of air in the system (engine running) the engine was not running any worse than before so i guess i must have just missed it before (opened the bleed screw too quickly or something) but still no leaks when pressurising the system with air compressor (and leaving it pressurised for 5 - 10 mins)
ive just done;
new seals in the sedimenter, ive never had any issues with it but it has been on and off a few times without changing seals
new fuel lines from tank to sedimenter, sedimenter to lift pump, lift pump to filter and filter to injector pump. i didnt buy enough pipe to do the return line, will do that soon tho.
it is running a lot better now but still a little work to do
i also had a look at the fuel sender, seems the o ring in the pickup has compressed and is not sealing properly. considering fitting a new sender, or just dismantling it and finding a new o ring
