Hi, does that plastic padded cover on the top of a 300TDI motor have any function. I have removed mine.

I've kept mine to cut down on the tappet noise a little.

On a related note, I've always wondered if is it supposed to be Tdi or TDi? The tappet cover on the engine says TDi, but the decals on the front guards of the Defender, and the tailgate of the Discovery say Tdi.

    Take your pick.

Turbo Direct Injection is what it stands for. VW have a trademark on TDI (all caps) AFAIK. Maybe LR changed because someone had trademarked TDi. Direct injection doesn't seem logical.

I reckon your right , Isuzutoo-eh , nothing "Direct" about the bosch pumps and set of Nozzles . Yeah , I like Turbo Diesel Intercooled !!
Then again , perhaps Having or not having a form of "Pre-combustion chamber" may be what makes it "Direct" or Indirect . HMMMM

Yes. Direct means no precombustion chambers.

Diesel engines are generally categorised as Indirect, Direct and (High Pressure) Commonrail. (there are a couple of other variants such as unit injectors and the VW pumpe-duse (literally "pump-orifice") system.

Incidentally, the series 3 stage 1 w/ 4BD1 (released in 1981/2) was the first mass produced direct injection passenger vehicle. Beating Renault by 4 years.

Though landrover claimed to have made the world's first direct injection passenger 4x4 in 1989 when the disco (200)Tdi was released

The claim may be partially true as the version I've read used the terms that the 200Tdi was the first "high speed" direct injection passenger 4x4. Although I understand the distinction, high speed is a laugh in itself.

Obviously the fact that Toyota were making DI 4x4s before the Tdi is an inconvenient truth.

    Which toyota 4x4s were DI???

A 200Tdi and a 4BD1+R380 would both have about the same theoretical top speed - so "high speed" is incorrect - "high rev" then the Tdi wins...
