4.6 conversion advice
just starting to plan the build of a 4.6l bottom end for the rangie, from my research it seems that the only p38 bits used are the block, crank, rods ect. with the externals coming from the 3.9 donar. does this include the timing chain assembly and water pump or are the 4.6l parts all used except the heads and inlet. all of the parts are going to be new ie. oil and water pump, cam and timing chain but I need to know what series to chase down. chris

Hello Chris,
Which inlet manifold/engine management system are you going to use? A 4.6 won't run properly with the fuel map from a 3.9.
The timing cover that you choose will determine which water pump you use.
Does your 3.9 engine have a distributor? What type of oil pump does it run?
Ron.

If you're using the crank angle sensor the P38 4.6 and D2 4.0 have a different mounting plate so you just need to make sure ther sensor matches the block. I think theres some difference in the nose length of the crank and necessitates a different timing cover and pulley.

at this stage i've got the 4.6 block crank rods and pistons, planning to use 3.9 heads and inlet with all pumps and chains being replaced with new as required. the 3.9 is a standard with distributer, currently in a 94 softdash. chris

Only other advice is use head and main studs whatever you do and follow the ARP instructions to the letter.
