Trailer socket mounting on S3 rear crossmember

I have a trailer plug socket mounted under the rear cross member on my series 3 but obviously the nature of it's location means it is totally trashed, the mounting plate is all bent and the spring loaded cover plate is stuffed. Rather than fitting another one under the crossmember and have the same thing happen, are there any other ways to mount this? Is it going to cause any structural problems mounting it in the crossmember itself? I have both a standard 6 pin plug (the diamond shaped one) plus a larger round utilux type in my box of bits, the larger one could be screwed on to the outside of the crossmember but I probably don't need the bigger plug.

    Any tips?

In the past I have fitted them in the PTO output hole in the X member.Simply spot weld a mounting plate for the socket(or Tek Screw)

Much simpler is the solution I have used on my 2a - the socket (in-line flat type) is simply screwed to the rear face of the crossmember, facing sideways, but could be facing down. I drilled and tapped two holes for 3mm screws, but self tappers would work. Cable leads over the top of the crossmember, keeping it away from sticks.
