What's to stop you unsoldering the chips, reading them, getting that file tweaked and rewriting it?
Worked fine with my Nissan work car. Because you're tweaking the original files, there's no problems with not having the correct version.

My understanding is that the programable/flashable ECU is compatable with all TD5 motors. You simply have to reprogaram to the vehice it's going into Defender, Disco, manual, Auto?
Again my understanding is non programabe ECU's (99 to 01?) can have the chip replaced on the ECU and then have the chip remaped. In other words you make a non programable to programabable by changing the chip.
You can use a late model ECU (post 02) in an earlier model vehicle but you need the CHIP remaping done. Also if you change the ECU you need to get your injector codes into the then ECU.
I thnink (Tombie?) does exchange ECU. You send him your ECU and he upgrades the program. You may be best PM'ing him

ok then, looks like i have to do further research as i do not want to take a risk that things won;t work as they should... i was of the belief that this was a relatively low risk alteration however some comments about the earlier engines not being suitable for the later ecu's are worrying.
does anyone have a flashable ecu in an early model td5, and after being re-mapped, all being fine??
I doubt it,I havent heard of any without teething problems.
The issues are all small, have you got a Nanocom???
I would consider that more important before the ECU upgrade.
I will say the ECU upgrade totally transforms the vehicle, much more driveability,POWER,economy remains unless you abuse the new found power.

Thanks Andrew,
Considering Williams isn't that far from me, I may take you up on that offer some time if needed..
In the mean time will continue trying to convince the better half that i need one myself :-)
