    300tdi and V8 gearbox interchangable??

    Hi guys,

I'm assuming that the gearbox's for the 300tdi and the V8 are the same (R380) in the late model D1's. Is this the case??

Is there going to be many issues switching them over??

    Thanks in advance.

    HI
I know with the actual gearbox is the same however I believe the bell housing and inputs are different (atleast this is the case with the auto). Not sure on the manual

Yes and No - read through the thread I started a few years ago. The outcome was a failure after 6 months because I didn't renew the bearing between the input and mainshaft- it disintegrated, letting the input shaft flop about and wear the #$# out of the custom bushing.

    Using a V8 R380 in a Tdi

I'm looking at doing the opposite - R380 from tdi into V8.

The Tdi ratios are lower (1-3 and 5th).

So it will be lower geared.

If you are happy with that, then yes, it is possible to fit a Tdi R380 to a V8, by mixing and matching bits from the two.

For Mr B- I do recall that you wanted to use a Tdi R380 in a V8 : The purpose of the thread was to show you the differences. As Mr IZR said, some of the ratios are a bit lower ( 5%+/-) and you can reuse the v8 bellhousing but the input shaft needs attention - buy a v8 input shaft or turn down the spigot on the tdi. Either way you have to disassemble the box and remove the layshaft to get the input shaft off and then put it back together with the right tolerances so what happened to me doesn't happen to you. At the end of the day it's probably easier to buy a 2nd hand v8 box ( There are more v8's than diesels..) or get yours rebuilt ( A little bit pricey but the guy in Sydney is pretty good at it).

With your conversion, did you find out if the bellhousing from the V8 can fit the TDI? More importantly, can the cast V8 clutch fork be adapted to the TDI bellhousing to stop the Pivot ball punching thru the pressed metal fork on the TDI?

    Cheers

Only a TDI bellhousing will fit a TDI motor . Are the bellhousings inerchangeable ? yes but its a waste of time , as the input shaft is different Diameter at the spigott, different overall length , and most important a different tooth ratio . Basically only the housing/selectors and output are interchangeable .
Ive just been through the exercise , and the only way is to get the whole R380 V8 box .
My observations whilst trying to get a V8 R380 , is that there appears to be about 6 TDI boxes for sale for every 1 V8 box . Yep the V8 is much rarer than the TDI !!!
