    TD5 EGT's.

    Gday all.
Probably been covered before, but what, in your opinions are acceptable EGT's for a chipped TD5 running 21psi boost, 3' mandrel bent exhaust, big intercooler and an upgraded ECU with over boost box towind a 2300kg caravan. I am after a maximum "set point" to dial in to my pyrometer. I do not want to over stress my engine and I am quite happy to "take it easy" as caravaner's do.
    Regards

My EGT alarm is set at 650. I have a setup pretty much the same as yours but run less boost (no boost box). I never tow. I set it at 650 on someone on heres recommendation (can't remember who). They said a Td5 was designed to run up to 750 (I think?) but only for brief periods and that 650 was a good safe limit to abide by.

When I fitted my EGT sensor I was amazed at how easy (and quickly) it got to 650 and (way) beyond. Since having the pyrometer I have changed my driving style somewhat. At 650 I find it will go off with regularity, if I'm hammering it, and acts as a gentle warning to step off a bit without getting me too stressed that I'm pushing the engine too much.

I have set mine at 650C as well, it's a good compromise. By the time the alarm beeps and you back off, it's usually in the 660-670s already, so it gives you a bit of leeway.

Yup. Tapped into the manifold just before the turbo. Thought of putting it in a an EGR blanking plate i had but on advise (again from on here) got someone to tap the manifold to get a better reading.

I have the same setup as you, but tow a 1500kg camper, my EGT gauge is set for 720, just below the max allowed of 750, I used to get unbelievably high temps, with it constantly going over 720, I then had TD5Alive re-do my map file to reduce the fueling and now I'm only getting mid 600 readings going up hills under load.

It's fine as long as your not constantly sitting in the high 600 to 700s for long periods.

I find if I bury the boot before the hill and then keep a trailing throttle once the temp reaches a certain point, the temps will drop or stay at a comfortable temp until your over the hill, also dropping back a gear with higher revs tends to lower the temps too, because the engine is not labouring.

Baz, how long is a "long period"?

Well I wouldn't go the intire length of the hill with the EGTs up in the 700s or for any longer than a minute or so, especially if it is a very long hill or your constantly climbing hills for a few hundred Ks.

I've found that once you reach about the mid 600s, that is a comfortable temp so you can hold a reasonable speed without crawling up hills at a snails pace.

As an example, Kurrajong is a fairly steep long climb, around 2 to 4k, I could hold third at about 50 to 60kph, but the EGTs would be up in the high 600s, this is too long for those temps, so I go back to 2nd and hold 50kph, the engine is revving higher but the EGTs will be in the mid 500s and for a hill that long this is a comfortable range to sit on for that long.

You need to teach yourself to drive by the EGT gauge and not the speedo and tacho, this way you look after the engine and as a bonus you reduce your fuel economy

You will find if you run more boost it will drop your EGT,s. I played around with my isuzu when I put a turbo on it and when I wound the boost valve up to get more boost the EGT,s drop right off. There are lots of tech guys on here that will vouch for that too.

    what he said.

In a diesel fuel is heat. some the cleaner you can burn it ie more air the cooler it will run. But the turbo will reach a point where it starts to create more heat. I think 21psi would be about the max for the stock turbo.
