    GEAR BOX BEARINGS ????

A mate and I have recently dismantled 5 landrover ser gearboxes 2x 2a boxes and 3x ser3 the 2 , 2a and one ser3 have all been powered by of Holden engines and each one has had all the main shaft and lay shaft bearings completely buggered these bearings have all been a mixture of Japanese bearings. The other 2 have had Timken bearings, they are worn but no where near the extent of the Jap bearings of which some have collapsed I am interested to know if anyone else has had problems with Jap bearings in gearboxes.

Not personally, but the advice I was given when rebuilding my LT95 was to use the original RHP brand bearings for the mainshaft, Timken where possible, and Jap for anything else. The reason given was that RHP/Timken last longer - especially behind an Isuzu 4bd1.
