    Cleaning out a fuel tank

    Hi All,
I have a Long Ranger sill tank to fit to the Defender, it has been out in the weather and when I drained the remaining fuel from it, about ten litres, I also got about two litres of rusty water.

I have rinsed it out a couple of times with diesel, but there is still a fair amount of rust and muck in the tank.

Any ideas of how to clean it out.

    Thanks

    Tony

I would recommend either the Por15 or KBS product range to solve your problem.

    Permanent Painted Coatings Home

Auto Petrol Tank Sealer Kit - Gas Tank Sealer - KBS Coatings

I have used the POR15 several times on different tanks and jerry cans and have since been told KBS, the Australian made equivalent is also very good.

    Thanks Erich,

I had thought of those products, they come up in forum threads every so often.

Does the cleaner and prep deal with the diesel and rust that is in the tank and can't be mechanically removed/cleaned?
I assume the water has got in though the fuel pickup, as the swirl pot is the most rusted spot I can see. No sign of any leaks though.

I had a similar issue with a tank a few years ago.
Got it fitted then added a couple of handfulls of 3/4 inch blue metal to the empty tank. everytime you braked you could hear it sliding about. After a month or so I removed tank and shook all the gravel and rust flakes etc out of tank, rinsed a number of times, and started using it for fuel. It is still operating fine. I fitted one of those little clear plastic filters in the line for the first year I think, and needed to replace them every few fills. Have since removed extra filter, as they were remaining clean.
    Worth a try?

the prep for the use of the POR15 or KBS Gold would be enough if your tank does not have pin holes in it. The blue metal idea sounds good if you have the time.
