Question too many batteries to choose from!

I'm in the process of building my 130 defender into a bit of a expedition vehicle.
Plan on doing the big lap next year but plan on taking 1-2 or more years to do it.

I'm trying very hard to do everything right the first time round in the hope that every modification suits my needs exactly.

so i need a dual battery system. will be adding solar into the equation later on (one i get my roof rack) so i need to factor that in too...
would be nice to fit them both in the box under the passenger seat but i can live with it being somewhere else.

but what I need is a battery that will do what i want it too do and there seems to be oodles of battery manufacturers out there claiming to be the best around.
trying to sort out the sales pitch bull**** from facts is doing my head in!

as it stands it looks like my power needs will be...

    2 x ARB fridge freezers (47ltr one as a fridge and a 35ltr one as a freezer)
300w inverter (will be used every now and then)
    various led camp lighting
+ other standard things like uhf, stereo ect which will primarily be used while the car is runny anyway.

any guidance would be greatly appreciated because right now i'm lost in all the options i have!

    Thanks
    Ben

If you are heading towards a dual battery setup, I'd consider the following:

    * When trying to fit 2 batteries under the passenger seat, you'll realise that the space tapers towards the back, limiting height. Consider a N70 size aux battery mounted towards the front and a DIN66 sized battery for the starter at the rear where the height is lower.

    * I'd recommend an AGM auxillary battery as they accept a higher charge current and charge quicker. Flooded deep cycle batteries cost heaps and charge slower.

    * If purchasing a dual battery system, consider a isolating type that charges your starter first, then brings your aux battery in parallel and then disconnects the starter after a minute or so. By isolating the other battery and charging one at a time, you should reduce your overall charging times.

can be very confusing are you planning on stopping in place for any time or driving every day ? a good 100amphr battery should cover you if you do some driving each day but maybe not if you stay for a week in a warm place where the fridge and freezer are working hard. If your taking a couple years then it sounds like you may be in one place for some time.

Yep AGM is what I have less to worry about I do have a 3rd wet type but it was a freebie not what i was looking for but it works well (NRMA deepcycle 4wd/marine) both are 100 ah good for at least 4 days but I dont have solar

    yeah that's my goal.

to be able to stop somewhere for a few weeks.
i was told today solar is not so good at charging a dead flat battery?

it's looking like i will need more then one battery just to run the fridges..

    ???

A solar panel will dump its short circuit current into a dead battery, its the best current limited charger around! Never mind your battery should be auto-disconnected from its load before it gets that low. A good solar panel set and regulator are worth their weight in gold for bush campers.

Buying one of those weenie petrol driven 12V chargers might get you out of trouble too, if you get a week of overcast.

    eg:

And a good starter kit for solar panels:

Hi Ben, are you just doing up your fender or are you planning on towing a trailer or the likes?

No I'm not going to tow anything if i can get away with it.

will be just me and the other half traveling so i should be able to fit it all in the 130.

up to this point all our camping and traveling has been in a suzuki jimny...

the 130 will feel quite spacious
