I thought I'd throw a few pics on the 3.9 I picked up for $500. Its done 250k, I've got a replacement cam, lifters, chain etc for it. Hopefully it'll give me another 100k.
Apart from the cam being very worn as seen in the pic, I noticed that the front cam bearing shell is quite scored. The others look perfect. Can I get away with just replacing the front one without doing the others? How do you replace it? just tap the old one out etc? Also what's an easy way to remove the cam gear from the cam?
It would be advisable to have all the camshaft bearings replaced. You don't tap them in with a hammer, that will ruin them in a few seconds. They need to be fitted with the correct tool that an engine reconditioner will have, such as the one made by Eaton.
