Question MadMan EMS installation - advice on fitting the sensors?

Looking for some advice and information on installing the sensors for the MadMan EMS.

Firstly the coolant level and temperature sensor:

I assume the bolt is the coolant level sensor? From what I gather it senses earth through the coolant and if that circuit is broken (due to no coolant in the system), then it triggers the alarm on the EMS?

With the coolant temperature sensor, I put the ring terminal between it and the plastic fitting as I assume it will need a better earth than earthing through the coolant, is this correct?

Not sure why the housing is plastic thogh, as the one on the website is metal:

So where does this housing actually go? Do I cut the top radiator hose or something and fit it in there?

The EGT probe came with some masking tape on it. Being myself that does before thinking, I pulled it off, and the fitting fell off. I then undid the two pieces of the fitting and the inside bits (ferets?) fell out. I know which way the tapered/coned ones goes (as there is a matching edge in one fitting pieces), but what about the small shanked washer thing, anyone know which way round that goes?

I assume when the fitting is tightened with the probe in the middle, this will crush inside and clamp the EGT probe in place?

And finally is the transfer box oil temperature. But I intend to use this for the automatic transmission oil temperature (according to the site - "Also suitable for automatics - at the loss of the transfer box temperature option." - LAND ROVER Kits - LR TD5 with engine oil pressure and transfer box temperature ). Any recommendations on where to fit the temperature sensor into the automatic transmission? Is the adapter that has been supplied in the kit for the transfer box going to be suitable for fitting the temperature sensor into the automatic transmission to or any idea what thread adapter I will need?

    No one? Nothing?

Surely someone on here has a MadMan EMS installed (many members talk about having them at least...) and can stick your head under your bonnet and confirm for me where the black plastic coolant sensor piece fits?

On a positive note, I've mounted the gauge, fitted and wired the t-adapter and engine oil pressure sensor, fitted and wired the automatic transmission oil temperature sensor (the sensor is perfect thread fit for the drain plug - but I'm moving it this afternoon to higher up where the cooler lines fit - ran out of light and time the other night - might have to go and get an adapter from Enzed or something to be able to fit it though).

Can't do the EGT probe until my EGR blanking plate arrives, as they forgot to include it (my current one while already tapped with a thread is too large and the thread tap in the top of my exhaust manifold is too small and not long enough for the whole probe length). Hopefully this will arrive early next week.

So, just the coolant piece I need to do now. I suspect it just goes in the top radiator hose (i.e. cut out a matching section), but would love confirmation!

    EMS Install

Hi - nice pics and good descriptions!

My installation was very straight forward (Manual 02 TD5 Discovery) and it's been in situ now for nearly 12 months. I have found that after being constantly reassured with continual 'real-time' engine updates.....it's quite disconcerting driving other vehicles and not knowing what your oil pressure, EGT and coolant are doing Hence, I'll be fitting another into my other 04 Disco....with the auto temp fitting included

Now......My installation was a bit different in that I had a coolant 'spacer' supplied with the EMS kit that replaced the LR fitting where the temp sender went. It was a simple fit however I had to modify (Cut) the engine cover to make a neat fit. The 'spacer' is where the temp sender now resides. (Can send you pics if you like)

You seem to have an 'in-line' fitting that takes both low coolant pick-up as well as the temp sender......Do you have a D1 TDi?? If so, it won't be at all difficult to plumb into your top radiator hoses and install the in-line fitting....Meaning you'll have to cut a length out of the hose.

If you have a TD5, I don't think you are going to have enough room to install the fitting so best bet would be to order the "spacer" from MadMan. (Check out their website to see what I mean)

In a TD5, the low coolant pick-ups are fitted into the radiator reservoir which makes installation easy. Your system won't be all that difficult to fit if you keep the in-line fitting and you are correct, the actual coolant completes the circuit. Remember to make sure all of your joins and threads are sealed properly with either thread tape or paste.

A point to note.....if you have a dramatic coolant loss, you'll need to have the sensor as high in the systems as you can, so you will have quick and early warning. Don't be tempted for the sake of an easy installation to fit it into a lower position....if you know what I mean.

You seem to be on top of the EGT install and have taken the wise choice of removing the EGR rubbish

    Enjoy!!

    I've got one awaiting installation.
For auto temp I was going to use the drain plug, and replace with sensor. Concerned that it would be subject to damage, so decided to go with a contact type sensors and fit it against the inwards pipe on the cooler. It will not tell me the temp of the oil IN the gearbox, but it will be very close. I may just set the alarm, a few degrees lower.

I'll try take some pictures tonight of my install on a 300tdi.

    • Water temp, I've replaced the stock temp sensor in the thermostat housing with a vdo one (I also run an Engine saver in the bung on the top of the thermostat housing)
    • Oil pressure - Currently just going into outlet above the oil filter (have a pressure switch in the mail, and a T piece at the ready)
    • EGT - Using machined thick blanking plate and tapped at an angle which is parallel with the hole in the manifold port (pictures should illustrate this better)
    • Transfer Case temp - still haven't attached the wire to the probe, but the probe is tapped into the bottom transfer case plate cover

The Display unit itself is fitted into the centre of the 3 52mm gauge holes in the dash. The hole required minor enlargement to fit the gauge, and my cutout isn't 100% tidy, but it looks good.

One think I wish is that I could somehow get a reading of the EGT fulltime, I originally had it on rotate between the available indicators, but have switched it to solely EGT as I am always curious as too the temp's throughout various inclines/declines (I've had centre muffler removed and fuel pump tweaked)
