During my apprenticeship in Winton in the late 1950's, the shop did not own a torque (or tension wrench, as they were then called) and it was a big deal to own one. ......
My father got one in the 1950s (he worked in the aircraft manufacturing industry at the time, although he bought it, I recall, to do a top overhaul on our Austin 16), but his mechanic son-in-law repeatedly borrowed it, as he did not own one until the 1970s.
