If you mean that the plate screws on to the timing case, yes it is a splash Guard, but my 92 does not have one. One was fitted to my 3.5s .

As far as I recall from 3 months ago the pulley "holder" which bolts to the front of the crank does not have any special feature.

The one inside the timing cover, behind the pulley? It is called an oil slinger, it's job is to throw oil away from the seal, reducing leakage. Splash guard about sums it up. They are very common in that application with many makes, so one would assume there is some kind of evidence to support their effectiveness. Don't know whether there is supposed to be one in your serp motor, I guess whether or not you install it would be influenced by whether it is going to foul anything or affect alignment of the belt.

I haven't had one of these timing covers off for several years, but Philip's post reminds me there was a splash-guard screwed to the timing cover from the inside. An oil slinger as I described, slips onto the shaft behind the pulley and rotates with the shaft. Not sure now which you mean. If you were to fit an oil slinger where the manufacturer did not intend, it will move your belt pulley forward by the thickness of the slinger (probably less than 1mm) which, with a serp belt, may (???) possibly be enough misalignment to affect the belt.

Dumb question, isn't the serpy fitted with an oil pump in the front cover? That would get in the way, wouldn't it? I've never seen one off.

Thanks for that, the only thing is that there are no screws, it just slides on, the timing cover must hold it in place.

G`day , seen plenty of dumb answers on here , no such thing as i dumb question .

A serpy cover still has a seal though they are directional and maybe why they`re not used .

it`s a oil deflector and it was deleted on the JA 92 model but in use prior .

The deletion seems to coincide with the upgraded directional crank seal .

I am sure that a 3.9 V belt timing cover does not have any oil slinger or seal guard either inside or outside.

The 3.5 timing cover had a guard plate screwed to the outside by about 6 screws AFAIR.
