300Tdi oil filter / sensor removal - how much oil?

I have a leak from around the oil filter in my 300Tdi (Disco).

I don't think it is coming from the oil filter seal itself, but rather the oil pressure sensor as has been identified by others.

If I was to remove the oil filter or pressure switch, without draining the oil, how much oil would come out? Would it be litres, or just the usual amount when dropping the oil and changing the filter?

Is the pressure sensor o-ring a common one that would be in a normal o-ring box set and is it best to change it from above or under the car?

Pressure sensor is a tapered thread from memory - minimal oil loss no o-ring maybe a copper sealing washer?????

Wont lose too much oil disconnecting any of those or even removing the whole oil filter housing - ie filter head, pressure sensor and oil cooler lines (it is above sump level)... unless you hit the key of course

I'd previously read that a leak coming from the oil filter area, but not the oil filter seal itself, was from the sensor.

If is it a copper washer, it may not be leaking from there?

I'm sure I read that it was a commonish leak and was an o-ring?

Anything else around there that I might be confusing it with?

It's common for the sensor to leak, get the model with the square end like a cut off coke can not the tapered end model, you'll know what I mean when you see the two different types. Pat

Is there not a seal (o-ring or washer) that can be replaced or is it usual to just buy a new sensor?

If I'm going to be in there, I'm also thinking about putting in an oil pressure gauge. Would that change what I need?

Any idea where I might lay my hands on the VDO 230-033 adaptor, I can't seem to find one over here in the West yet.

    Bit more research:

So is it the metal washer that leaks?

I've now seen photos where the washer appears to be stuck onto the sensor and others where it is separate.

Maybe just a tighten up might seal it for a while longer.

Pat, what's the go with the two sensors? Do you mean the one below is better, why?

Mate the top one is the one that leaks, they change from white to black as they fill with oil and then leak past the terminal and the oil light stays on. Pat

    Cheers Pat.

I don't have a permanent oil light on yet, so here's hoping it is just leaking down the thread.

The connector is covered in oil, but it is more like residue rather than fresh oil, which adds weight to the washer leak.

If it was leaking from the connector, it looks like it would not leak onto the oil filter but rather drip from the connector.

I tightened the whole sensor up a bit last night and found it was tight, but not really tight.

So hopefully that will sort it for a while.

It is also common for the switch to leak from where the plastic bit meets the nut. I have changed hundreds of these in my life time (mostly red motor Holdens) and If they are a tapered thread never leak from there.

Just had to replace the O ring with an oil leak post CSR.
My mechanic very experienced with landys mentioned that any old O ring won't do the trick due to the extreme temps in that area. Not expensive but best to fit the right one
