timing cover oil seal
Just wondering about replacing the seal on the v8 timing cover. Rave says to lubricate oil seal sealing surfaces with engine oil. Does this mean the outside edge too? Because why would you want that part to be lubricated and run the risk of slipping? Also I guess you tap the new one in from behind the timing cover?

No they mean the seal 'lips' or labia if you like.
No you push it in from de front.( thank god as it would be a right pain to take off the timing case every time you replaced a seal)
