    ZF kickdown cable

Disco was a little sluggish this morning and i knew from earlier in the week that the auto kcikdown cable had excess slack, popped the bonnet and found why, bloody cable has snapped . None of the parts suppliers website have them listed so hope they arent hard to find, looks like i'll have to borrow dads pootrol - oh the shame.

AFAIK the ZF needs the cable for line pressure, I wouldn't drive it far as is. Search Phillip A's and Bee Utey's posts for a possible / alternative source / cable. From memory the is one from something else that fits at a fraction of the OE price.

Answer to your other post and PM'd you as well.
Loanrangie, it was for a 300TDI, in the case of my Son's repair it was the Auto repairer bloke that suggested that he use the cheaper Falcon cable, your local Auto Box repairer should have the Ford one in stock take yours in and compare, Regards Frank

Only a T27 bit, I would get 2 as they are easily twisted and ruined, and some of the valve body bolts are TIGHT!!

DO NOT forget to preload up the spring for the cam in the gearbox that the cable connects to by at least 1 turn, (I think 2 turns are too much but you'll see what I mean) as if you don't, the cable will not return when the throttle is released.

What a ***** of a job , now all assembled again and filled with ATF.
Going by rave and i ajust the cable so thre is 28mm between bracket and end of cable housing there will be a lot of slack, i adjusted it up so there is approx. 5mm of deflection in the cable.

I adjust these by bringing the cable up so that at 9/10's throttle travel you can feel the extra force required to open the 'dump' valve up in the valve body. Then go for a drive and tighten it slightly in small amounts until you are happy with upshift points. Over tightening won't hurt the trans, just make the vehicle undriveable/ annoying. Conversly, not enough tension will cause slippage and overheating/ sluggish shifts.
I agree, it is a pain even WITH a hoist and air tools

Test drive on the way to work showed some sluggish shifts so will tighten the cable up a bit before heading home tonight, other wise glad to give the pootrol back to dad and drive my car again.
