D2 TD5 front driveshaft and CDL issue

Hi all, I have just replace my front drive shaft and was reading with interest other posts on this subject. I got a replacement from Murray at MJk Discovery but after my one blew up leaving me on the side of the road in need of a tow. Mine is the town model so I can't disengage 4wd mode.

Anyway, after putting in the replacement, the vehicle shudders more than ever, as if the drive shaft is about to go south on me just like the last one felt just before it went.

I was told that there is only one type for my model and it only goes in one way and I have made sure that the flanges all meet as they should.

    What have I missed?

Also, I read about a "CDL actuator" needing to be disengaged as I have noticed (for a few months now actually), 3 dash lights remaining on. They are the traction control, the ABS light and a 3rd (can't remember this one and I have the car elsewhere at the moment).

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers,
    Pete'

Town model or ANY model, they are all constant 4wd...

Are you sure you havent got the Centre diff lock activated?

Try unbolting the shaft and turning it 180 degrees on the flange.

    Hi Tombie,

MJK were telling me that there was a model that allowed you to drive home with one of the shafts cactus but maybe they meant the rear shaft so that the front wheels could still drive. Either way, mine couldn't.

I don't "think" I have the cdl activated. it should be sitting in "H" right?

If this is a dumb question then remember to go easy on me mate! :-D

As for turning it on the flange, the holes only line up one way. I know this coz when I first went to install this new one, I couldn't get the front end of the shaft to match up with the bolt holes until I did turn it so that they did line up.

As said all the Disco's are constant 4WD(actually All Wheel Drive as the centre diff is "open").
The centre diff lock is std on the D2a range(update).
It works in both High and Low range.
Some of the earlier D2's had the parts fitted in the transfer box but no activator, some of us fitted kits to activate them.
The "limp home mode" is done by removing the bad drive shaft, locking the centre diff and driving home in 2WD mode.
If the centre diff is locked the light will be on the dash, it shows the 4 wheels joined as a little picture.

The 3 lights you refered too could be one of two things.
1/ If you have an earlier Disco(non update) and the motor is turned off with the centre diff lock on these lights will show.
Start the motor and dissengage the diff lock(light out) and turn off the motor, they should be gone on the restart.
2/ You may have a dose of the 3 amigos, have look in "The Good Oil" for the helpfull threads.

For your vibration check the shaft is around the right way(don't know if it fitts wrongly but I'll through it up).
The double cardin joint should be at the transfer box end.
Also was there any movment in the flanges on the diff or transfer box?
Also check the front has droped in properly, the can jamb at an odd angle.
Try putting the Disco up on stands and by hand rotate the shafts to see if somthing is not running true, it should stand out if wrong.
    Cheers, Kyle

some d2's had a cdl in the transfer case and some didnt, only that D2a or facelift D2's had the mechanism in the car to engage it.
if you have an earlier d2 with the cdl you can engage it from under the car with a 10mm spanner to get home if one of the driveshafts or diffs etc is cactus doesn't matter front or rear.
so unless you have a late model D2a ie.e 2004 then you can't engage CDL from inside ( unless your car has been modified )

turning the shaft 180 degrees on one end only can take away some vibrations in some cases. yes the flange has an offset bolt pattern but it will fit on at 180 degrees around.

Thanks guys. Am going to check it all when on the hoist tomorrow. Will also do the 180 thing and see if that helps.

Re the 3 amigo's, I had actually thought that because I had had them on constantly now for so long, that it was actually due to oil in the loom (another problem I have yet to get around to fixing)...

Ok, new shaft turned 180 and back in. Vibration is still there (), but I think it's something else now because its between 1800 rpm through to 2250 rpm. It then vanishes.

I know it was mentioned that a motor mount might crack when you break the driveshaft but I can see anything under those cones covering them. Is there any other way of telling guys?

    Thanks in advance...

if you stick a pen up underneath the mount, there is a hole that it can go into to use as a measure, if the mount is in good condition, the pen will go in 15-20mm, bad mounts the e pen will only go in 5 mm or so. will try and find a picture to show you

    p.s. TD5 engine vibration at 2250rpm.......
    unheard of
no, seriously possibly 50% of td5 owners complain of this problem
many have fixed it, many just put up with it.
the good oil will tell you a number of possible causes.
engine mounts, harmonic balancer, injectors, injector loom, oil in harness, MAF sensor and probly even more.
