    Water in the Airbox

Changed the air filter this arvo, noticed the filter was wet and water in the bottom of the airbox.

Haven't done any water crossings, haven't cleaned the motor with water.

How does the filter get wet, it would need to almost fill the airbox to do that wouldn't it

Could it be coming down the snorkle

    Baz.
    Cheers Baz.

    Hey Baz,
Any chance it could be coming in through the "duck bill".
Was the water dirty like road spray?
    Cheers, Kyle

if it rains with the engine running, the snorkle ingests some water with the air its got to go somewhere, and the filter stops most of it or sieves it down to particle size that the engine can ingest safely.

When you stop the leftover thats not been picked up sits in the bottom of the filter.

it can also be caused by running your engine for short periods in high humidity.

I get water in the bottom of the oilbath filter for foz and he hasnt been washed since before the cape.

When you have the engine running you will suck a small amount of water into the inlet of the snorkel, but when you are moving forward in rain, then you can ingest quite a bit of water down the inlet, that is why I turn the head of my snorkel facing backwards when it is raining.

on the 300TDi the air box has several drain holes to let the water out, if the TD5 has them you might want to see if they are blocked?

Thanks everyone, might need to get a new duckbill, the hole is blocked with Gaffa tape

    Thanks, Baz.

I think you are better off putting a snorkle sock over the inlet when it is raining, and blocking the "duckbill" valve completely. That way,if you have to traverse any deep water in your travels, you won't have the problem of water ingestion via the valve.Might save an engine.

I recently had to drive for 4 hours up the freeway in heavy rain.

The 11o is a TD5 with Mantec Plastic Jobby snorkel fitted.

Anyway, about 3.5hrs into the journey the car started missing and generally driving crap. I stopped the car and whilst I was getting soaked, found a seriously wet air filter, about 50% of the depth of it (top half exposed to air intake rather than engine side) was wet.

This had me worried to start with, but the only way in was from the top of the air intake!

So, as others have said, air-bourne water does get sucked in, enough wet air clearly is capable of stalling an engine.
