    qld vehicle modification rules

Light vehicle modifications (Department of Transport and Main Roads)

This is the qld gov web site for the rules on modifying any light vehicle (including 4x4's)

although the PDF's are appalingly bad quality and they haven't updated them since 1999 by the looks, at least this stops the speculation BUT there is still room for interpretation.

Don't get to excited to think you have found some black or white...... There are so many buts, if's and maybes.....also due to the ruling in the LVC, and the category that LR's fall under, some rules are applied from the heavy vehicle code. On top if all that it is determined by the individual you are dealing with, and even then DOT have final say.

I thought that might be the case given that even with the short read I had I saw serveral points that could be taken different ways; and it gives a refrence point to start from.

I would like a ruling on whether a RR clasified as a higher spec model to a disco, given that the chassis was the same? (1990's) if so you dont need it engineered if you change from the 3.9 to the 4.6 if the brakes are changed as well?

its good to throw questions out here, but at the end of the day the only way to be certain is to speak to either a DOT approved engineer or DOT...from what I have found there is way to much miss information on the net from people that have had mates do this or know a guy that did that etc etc, and no mater how correct some one here is, if the DOT wont let you then its no go.

I know a guy that has had some stuff engineered and DOT approved, but I wont use him as an example for stuff I want to do, as it may make DOT look harder at him and then renig on his stuff.....thats how silly it is because its one big grey area.

Yep go to the approving source sounds good to me, so how do I find the engineers that have experience in modifying 4wd's?

I've tried yellow pages/google but dont seem to be using the right sets of words or maybe my brain is on holidays as I keep drawing a blank; any help appreciated

im feeling your pain.....I to am looking for the approved people. I went to DOT, and asked them for contact details of approved people in my area that can do LD1. They gave me two names, both "blue platers". The first was in Southport, so I went to see him. He seemed a bit confused by what I want to do and said that he isnt approved for LD1 and anyway I would need an engineer fof my mods.....

To me Blue platers generally arnt engieers (yes there will be some who are), just approved people for the simple stuff, like seat changes etc, the kind of common stuff that has been done alot and already been sorted by engineers or there are direct guide lines by DOT. So as soon as you want to go out side this small box it becomes a mission. Ill let you know how I go.

All I want to do (at this stage) Is remove my trailing arm mount, remove my body out rigger and fabricate a new one to incorperate both, back in the original body outrigger position. And build a battery tray directly behind it. (both sides) This also means new longer trailing arms. Im well aware that the welding will most likely have to be done by a cert welder, and the arms made to comply with the relevent ADR's...
