    Before The 200tdi...........

Before the 200 tdi engine there was a 2.5 turbo diesel engine, does anybody know much about these engines ?? Were they any good ?? Reliability etc?? I can't seem to find much info on them.
Was it an engine option here in Australia ?? I happened to stumble upon one today that was shipped out from the uk, the owner seems to think it's a better engine than the 200tdi

Well to put it simply - they were a crap engine that is why in the 80s Landrover Australia refused to have that engine in their vehicles and put the Isuzu 3.9 Diesel in our landies.

Was that the VM Donk? I had heard that they were a good boat anchor. I was looking at a Rangie in a caryard in Melbourne about 10 years ago and the salesman was trying to push it on me telling me how good they were. Glad I did some research.

No - the 2.5 was a stroked 2.25 diesel - (originated from the late 50s) that had a turbo on it - was never sold in an Aust Landie

To confirm the above - the 2.5 was an updated version of the 2.25, petrol and diesel. The diesel was turboed in about 1986 and but a less than outstanding success.

However, none of these 2.5l engines were ever sold new in Australia. There are probably a few about that came in as private imports, but I have never seen one. During the period that these were fitted overseas the only engines offered here were the V8 and the Isuzu (4BD1 in the 4x4 and 4BD1T in the 6x6).

    Jerry,
As others have said the 2.5TD was crap. Dont touch it with the preverbial barge pole!

Prior to that there was a 2.5 Diesel (non-turbo). That was very reliable but massively under powered.

Before that there were the 2.25 petrol and diesel varients, they are before my time, although I can confirm that its easy to change the head gasket in the desert with limited tools on a 2.25D

Reliability issues aside, they are also indirect injection (IDI), vs direct injection (DI) from 200tdi - on.

IDI engines are less efficient and use more fuel than equivalent DI engines.

Without starting an arguement, the 4cyl 2.5TD that came out in Range Rovers until about 1992 in the UK was in fact a VM Diesel. I am not sure how far back the go, about 1986 I think.

They are an early version of the 2.5TD that was later seen in Jeep Cherokee in about 1997 in Aust.

And yes they were very average and I would not rush out and buy one. They have individual cylinder heads and originated from the marine/stationary engine arena. Oh and they are italian engine from memory.

The 200Tdi could not have been worse than the VM Diesel.

Almost. the 2.4 VM was fitted from 1986-1989. The 2.5 VM was fitted from 1989-1992, however I don't think it made it to AU since the 2.4 proved to be such a lemon.
