This might be silly but hows the rear axle or front ?
I had a similar thing happen to me, thought it was the T/C but turned out to be the drive member on the right rear.
Again, this might be silly.![]()
Driving along this morning, slowed to go around a roundabout, I think there was a click (like when TC slips from high to neutral), no gears. Tried low range, no gears, thought that the range selector must be disconnected, so got my son (200Tdi 110) to tow me off the road.
When park is selected, vehicle is held stationary, so this confirmed that the transfer case was selecting high or low etc.
Idle motor, tried each gear, linkages all connected and moving as expected, no gears.
Checked that there seems to be plenty of ATF....., drained a little, no metalic objects obvious in reasonably bright red oil.
As you turn off motor you can hear a wirring noise that reduces as the motor comes to stop.
Have I broken the T/C?
or is there something else I can check before pulling gearbox out?
Ideas please.

When Park is selected, and handbrake is off, CDL not engaged, vehicle can't be moved, prop shafts do not turn. I think this indicates that the drive train is OK.

you will need 2 people to do this,
have someone in the drivers seat and put it into drive with the engine running, with the wheels chocked and foot on the brake of course,
second person looking underneath at the drive shafts, if either of the shafts are spinning, you will know you have a diff or axle problem, the front or rear shaft spinning will tell you if it's a front or rear problem
RoverV8, yes tried that, the wirring is within the gearbox I think, as per lying under the vehicle when engine is turned off. There is no prop shaft movement.

Sprags fail in the auto, but can usually take off in first, clutch hub in auto or input gear into tranfer case has stripped its spline
Michael, if you have no reverse or forward gears etc, I would suspect the torque converterand/ or pump. what a pain!!!Still, be a good excuse to upgrade to the Ashcroft bigger torque converter etc etc...
(Ph is flat at the moment, give me a call at work tomorrow?)

I have a chance on Monday (public holiday in Canberra) to go and get (remove) a gearbox and TC from a 300tdi disco wreck. Sounds like it would be worthwhile having a set of spares to either rebuild or fit.
I'll let you know what I discover as I pull it apart.

So what did the problem turn out to be? I am suspecting failed center differential.
Problem traced to stripped spline in Torque Converter
Pulled the filter apart, little metal deposits, likewise on the drain plug magnet, so seems that the gearbox should be OK.
Now I am in the process of moving transfer case 1.4 gears to a 1.2 case then it can all go back in.
