    2001 disco td5 - water in 5 cylinders - any ideas?

hey guys, i dont own this car but im working on it. ive tried pregtty much everything and a few landrover guys and head shops have tested / tried things as well. maybe theres a somebody here who has any bright ideas (covering all bases)

    landrover disco td5 2001
came in blowing HUUGE amounts of smoke, no oil, no coolant, missfiring, ect.
so numerous problems, i put it down to a blown head / gasket and a turbo seal.

stripped it down to find the gasket and head where gone and the turbo had dropped its shaft due to lack of oil so we replaced the head / gasket / bolts / turbo.

1st start - took a while to start (air in fuel) once started ran fine for about 10 minutes then stalled. force started it again and ran for about 10 minutes then stalled. messed about with it for half an hour then decided to rip the injectors out and crank it over.

all 5 cylinders full of coolant.

off comes the head again. nothing seams abnormal, gasket seems to of sealed, bolts where tensioned correctly.

put it down to a dowel getting crimped between the faces. replaced the dowels, gasket and bolts again.

10 minutes of running and same problem.

the bolts are all the right length and have been tensioned correctly, the gasket looks to be sealing correctly. the head has been back to the head shop (was a new head) to be double checked and see if it was a factory fault but came back negative.

theres water in the oil but not oil in the water (probably because it hasnt run for long enough)

a few landy guys have said that coolant may be getting into the fuel rail / inlet manifold. but i dont see how this would let coolant into the oil as well.

i thought maybe an oil cooler fault. wich would explain the coolant and oil mixing but doesnt explain the coolant in all 5 cylinders?

has any1 else got any ideas about this. any help / ideas / advice is realy appreciated.

    sorry forgot to add.

when it is running it runs reasonably well, no nocks.

piston potrusion seems to be fine so im leaning away from there being a bent rod or a bottom end problem. all pistons look to be even in hight at tdc.

    head gasket is 3 hole

    cheers!

Just a thought, if coolant is in all 5 cylinders it may be posible that it is entering via the EGR valve. The EGR cooler mounted on the front of the head may be leaking.

yeh a few guys have pointed me in that direction. only problem is its a 2001 so it doesnt have the egr cooler, just the normal egr with no cooling.

its got me stuffed. anybody else got any thoughts?

Metal in the head has become permeable... had that problem after cooking (loss of coolant and overheating several times before I found the leak) the engine once too many.
Alloy head was overhauled by reputable company, but could never keep coolant and oil in their own worlds... Never ran perfectly, and AFAIR, was blowing lots of smoke too.

Tentative diagnosis was that the metal's microscopic structure had altered and was now u/s.

    Might be worth exploring...

its got an exchange head fitted so its pretty much a new head. have also had the head checked once it failed the 1st time by my head shop and theyve given it the ok.

the engine never actualy cooked, they pulled over because it started missfiring and blowing smoke.

block / old head shows no signs of excesive heat. just a small crack in gasket.

theres coolant in all 5 cyclinders, evenly spread. for it to be a crack / pourus head / cracked block it would have to be on all cylinders so i dont think thats the problem.

does the fuel rail have any coolant seals in it? i know theres the o-ring on the fuel screen / filter in the fuel block but does that seal from coolant?

This is pure speculation, as I'm not familiar with LR's diesel heads...

Assuming that there is "exactly" the same amount of coolant in each pot when you remove the head, then the possibility is that fuel and coolant are mixing before injection.

Does the head contain a gallery or 'channel' for the fuel to run through on its way to the injectors ?

A tiny crack between this and the water spaces may do this... But if the fuel is under high pressure, then the theory goes down the gurgler...

If your engine has a fuel return to the tank.... then check the tank for water/coolant.

yeh i thought of that as well, but the idea of it running with water passing through the injectors doesnt seem to work. when its running it runs well, no missfire plenty of power but then fills with coolant and stalls.

im ready to pass it on to some one specialising in landrovers i think.

    cheers for the replys

Box of matches and 10 ltr Jerry can and somewhere quiet and insurance... problem fixed..
Make sure your usuping the correct thikness gasket shaved head may not fully seal with standard gasket allowing water in when it heats up a little bit.... bit like them manifold gaskets on the tdi's. Them buggers have like 5 different thinknesseses wrong one and u get leaks..
