    my aftermarket crap saga continues

    A couple of weeks ago I bought a stepper from ebay from UK. Listed on ebay as Idle Control valve for Land rover and Range Rover V6 and V8.( Hmm maybe that should have been a clue)

    Now I know that LR steppers are about $200 and this one was about $40 but IMHO, the LR price is outrageous as these steppers are common to Chevs and made in the millions.

    Got the stepper today and fitted it but the plug would not fit . Compared it with my OE stepper and the little tabs inside the fitting holes are 45 degrees out compared to the OEM one.Ie The ones on the OEM are directly below the locking tab, but on the replacement are on the RH side with tag pointing up and looking directly down on the socket.

    If you fit the plug so that it is 45degrees out and actually fits in the stepper it doesn't work, so it seems that the wires are probably correct but you cannot fit it!

    How this happened and noone has complained is curious .
    I have emailed the vendor and am waiting for the next exciting episode. I will have to change my name to Ron.

    - Bet others have complained, or "commented"...but there must be ways of getting around the consequences.

    Well maybe, I know I may be able to bodge something but why should I.
    Its a Paypal deal so I can get my money back, but I want a bloody stepper.
    The problem with switching wires is that I may damage the stepper .
    I already bought a really cheap stepper from a US site which was exactly the same appearance but for several Chevs etc. The wires however must be in a different order in those Chevs as it seized first time.

    Or maybe it was just a crap unit. So I am not going to ad lib yet. The stepper has 2 sets of wires, in and out, and I think if you mix one in and one out you have problems.
    I cannot believe there are several permutations, and I just think that some Chinese vendor stuffed it up.
    It really MAY be easier than that. All it really may need is to knock off the little ribs inside the socket and then I would be able to fit the plug correctly,IF the wire order is correct with the plug one turn left.

    Hi Philip

    If you understand how a stepper motors work, the only issue should be the replacement of the wiring .

    But if the stepper motor works into a gearbox, that only does a part of a circle then you do have a problem.

    Just for info , I pulled one apart.
    It works by a signal coming from one of two circuits in the ECU, one turns it one way and the other the other way.

    The wires go to the outside of the motor and the inside turns on a screw arrangement which pushes or pulls the shaft in or out.

    Every time you turn off the engine, the ECU winds the stepper completely inwards. That is why when you start the engine will rev up to say 1800 then come down to idle.
    One thing I have learned is that it is virtually impossible to "clean" a stepper. All you can clean is the output shaft which is only part of what could gum up. So if your stepper is lazy , the only cure is to replace.

    The stalling in R or D problem is endemic to 14CUX and may or may not be the stepper. I think its a combination of an old stepper and the inherent slow reaction of the 14CUX.
