    110 Auto conversion options

Have read numerous post but would like some new input please. Im currently running a 1997 5 spd 110, ute. Now the bride and I are keen to go touring in the next year. The engine is fine and I'm currently running a disco transfer case. I'm looking at converting to an Auto so we can share the driving. Some questions I'm pondering

1, Is there another Auto box that can be fitted other then the standard disco. if so what is the advantage.

2 If i fit a disco box should I drop back to the defender transfer case.

    3. Has anyone done it and if so are you happy with the results.

    4. What is the lockup mod and Torque convertor mod talked about in some forums.

I will be towing a light weight pop top or solid floor camper trailer. Hoping to cruise at about 100 kph.

    Hey Bazzle,

Here is the link to Ashcroft's Defender auto conversion kits.

Not the cheapest option but certainly the best !!

Lockup mod is a mod thats done to the valve body in the auto.

Normally it only locks up in 4th gear. There is a clutch inside the torque converter that mechanically locks the input and output of the converter so you have direct drive. This is controlled by the hydraulic magic in the valve body.
The mod allows the box to also lock up in 3rd gear, which is a much more useful gear for towing. 4th is OK on the flat, but too high as soon as you start climbing, or have a decent headwind.
Since its locked up you don't get the heat generation that from torque convert slippage you normally would at high loads in 3rd gear, and the RPM stays lower (due to no slippage).

I was seriously looking at the mod when I had my D1, and definitely would have done it if I had kept the vehicle. Around the $800 mark when I looked a couple of years back.

Edit: Is it a case of the bride can't drive a manual, or that she won't. If its a simple case of can't, then I'd invest the time/$$$ into that side of things rather than the auto.

    Steve

I would seriously consider an auto conversion, i love the defender but not keen on a manual (not that i cant drive a manual but i just love my tdi auto disco and cannot see any disadvantage to one in a fender).
You dont need any expensive conversion kits just a disco tdi zf auto and all the required bits for the conversion out of a wrecked disco.

Yeah but last time I asked M.R. it was far from cheap......

I should qualify that by saying that another place I checked with was more expensive !
