Maybe a rock jammed between the disc and caliper. Turn the disc backwards while having a look.

There's a very loud "click" that you can hear (and feel through the pedal) that appears to be coming from the passenger side calliper.
(It's a non-abs 90 RRC so vented discs)
Looking at it now - the pads/discs are reasonably new and wearing even. There's a lot of play between pad edges and calliper , i.e. a good 3mm a side - equivalent to the amount of movement allowed by the slotted holes through which the locating pins pass - which I'd presume is correct...but the noise would appear to be the pads hitting the calliper when you apply the brakes.
As it's the later brakes the retaining pins have no pad locating spring plate, just the concentric springs around the pins.
Completely stumped....! and yes the calliper bolts are tight!
Help!

Were the correct pads fitted?
98 Harvey the tractor - 300 tdi Defender Wagon
84 Alfetta GTV
Unfortunately no rock...
The pads are Bendix DB117 - which I fitted about 20k ago with new rotors. They're hardly worn which probably goes a long way to explain the lousy brake performance...What is noticeable though is that the trailing edge of one backing plate appears to be contacting the calliper - it's worn shiny whereas the other on isn't. Maybe the click is the backing pad seizing momentarily on the calliper?
Anyway as I was in Repco this afternoon getting brake cleaner I got a set of new pads - they're Repco's own brand manufactured by Ferodo (at $70 worth an experiment). The backing pad measure 1.03mm wider than the ones coming off - which would be manufacturing tolerance.
Only problem was when I went to fit the drivers side set I noticed the wiper seal had popped off one piston - aargh! Last time I replaced the pistons I went through countless retaining rings trying to drift these things into place.
Tempted to just order new callipers unless someone has a trick solution?
thanks

Got it all back together and gone for spin/bed in.
The new pads have fixed the clicking noise. No conclusive reason except I did find a lump of plasticy gung stuck in the corner of the suspect calliper - it's the remains of the anti-squeel pad Bendix stick on the backing plate.
Have to say, I'm quite impressed with the Repco pad. A lot more initial bite , progressive feel and very good power (easy to lock up). Certainly much better than the Bendix but will have to wait and see if they fade etc. Not bad for $70.
Incidentally they're made by Federal Mogul, not Ferodo - the pad profile is chamfered and slotted like an EBC pad.
thanks all
