    255/85/16

G'day, What options are there for a 255/85/16 Tyre to suit my defender.
I have noticed that it is not a very popular size. The BFG MT would suit but have been getting some bad reports.
    Cheers.

I had Maxxis Bighorns on my 300tdi in that size. Good value tyre imho. Decent on road/mud/sand and not too noisy.

Only options locally AFAIK are BFG, Coopers, and Maxxis Bighorns.

Please point me at the bad reports about the BFG MT's as I'm up for a new set soon.

Hey Steve, Just having a yarn to a few blokes that I know that have the BFG down here in Tas on there Toyota Hilux's and they have been tearing the sidewalls. They love the tyres though, they say they handle great and I have been in the vehicles and they do seem quiet for their aggresive pattern. I would get something like a Bighorn or BFG MT, but I have run with Cooper ST for the last while (on my previous vehicle) and am a bit worried about going more aggresive. I just got a Deefer and its still got the original Grabbers in 235/85/16, but they are stuffed, so I would like to go up one size.

Cooper's ST are their only tyre in 255/85.

If people are ripping the sidewalls out of BFG MT's I can only see the same thing happening with Maxxis 762's and Cooper ST's.
None of them are that strong when it comes to staking.

762 Bighorn's howl but it isn't a problem in a Deefer with the wind and road noise inherent from the shed on wheels.

I second the Maxxis tyres, good tyre and not too noisy for a Deefer...

Noise isn't the biggest issue here. The real thing to consider, on a daily drive anyway, is how predictable and good are they in the wet - fit that you won't beat the BFG's. Comparing them against anything else is a bit like apples and oranges.

If its for a CCV or pure play thing where you could expect to hammer the tyres then by all means look at other (cheaper) options.

The other thing to consider with 255x85R16s is that on a standard defender with standard LR 16x7 rims you may get a bit of rubbing against the arches.

Correct! I have them on my stanard 110 and when you articulate, even a little bit, they rub. I don't really want to cut the arches as it's an early 1983 model and I want to keep it original, so I will be dropping down a size.

Maxxis 762's are at least as good as the old BFG MT's in the wet.
Can't compare them to the new ones, I've never run them.

I had two sets of the old BFG's and replaced them with Big Horns and there's no difference in performance on slippery bitumen and performance on fast dirt/gravel is near enough identical in my non scientific, non back-to-back appraisal.

BTW, I don't have a problem with rubbing on the 130 and it flexes a bit better than a stocky

Unfortunately all my old forum photo's have gone ta-ta's as my photo host has gone belly up
