Did you cycle the fuel pump 5 or 6 times after changing the filter? Ignition on and wait until pump stops cycling, ignition off and repeat. Always works for me.![]()
G'day all!
I did a minor service on the Defender last weekend, in preparation for a trip after Christmas.
I replaced the fuel filter - simple procedure, as per the workshop manual.
Since then, the fuel pump whine has an irregular pitch, and I get a corresponding gurgling in the filter on priming, when the ignition is first turned on.
I don't think I've done anything wrong... has anybody else had this problem? I've done a forum search, but not found anything.
Perhaps there's an air lock in the filter? Perhaps removing it and priming it with diesel might fix the problem?
Cheers!
Michael

I cycled it 2 or 3 times, with no effect. I have been for a couple of drives since then, one for a good 3 hours, and it still sounds the same at ignition on.
The vehicle drives the same, so no ill effect on performance. My only concern is that I'm not stressing the fuel pump out, leading to an early demise (with my luck, while on our holiday).
I'll try cycling it a few more times this afternoon when I get home.
Thanks!
Michael
Something else to check, when you removed the old filter, did you check to see that the small rubber oring that seals against the filter and housing/thread came away with the filter? I had it stay behind once and ended up fitting the new filter with an additional o-ring. Produced something similar to what you are describing.
Mine was also getting noisy some time ago, so decided to drop the tank and pull the pump out for a look. Quite a bit of **** covering the intake screen on the pump. Cleaned it all up and it did make a difference. I do it annually now, through a plate cut into the tub above the pump.
Plenty of threads on dodgy fuel pumps too. Consensus seems to be if yours is still going at between 150 and 200k, get yourself a new/spare.
Best of luck.
Umm if you don't already know the vehicle has a self bleeding mode. Just turn the ignition on and depress fully and release the throttle pedal 5 times. The check engine light will start flashing as it enters the bleed mode. Just leave it for about ten minutes while it goes through it s various cycles.
Thanks for the advice guys! As luck would have it, when I turned the ignition on this evening, the gurgling and inconsistent fuel pump noise was gone, and the fuel pump was, if anything, quieter than before.
I did make sure when replacing the filter to discard both O-rings, top and bottom, and put the new ones on.
Wasn't aware of the self-bleeding mode, though. Is this something that's in the workshop manual? Handy thing to know.
Thanks again guys for the awesome assistance.
