    Help td5 won't start/start motor won't engage

My td5 2000 defender won't start. There is plenty of charge in the battery, there is power to the starter motor. When the key is placed in the start position there is no power to the wire that engages the solenoid, when this is done the headlights do not go dim so there is plenty of grunt. I have looked at the Rave to find there is a starting circuit relay (R102) rave does not indicate where it is located. Does anyone know????
The other thing I have found is that there is oil at the plug into the module unit with the aluminium top and I assume that is the ECU. I have cleaned the plug with metho and contact cleaner at both ends so there is no oil residue.
The thing still will not engage the starter motor.
Any hints please before I ring the ex dealer!!!
    Thanks in anticipation.

Have you been doing any work on the vehicle recently?

The starter solenoid engagement is controlled by the ECU... Not a direct feed from the key.

Have you tried pressing the inertia switch under the bonnet?

Sounds like you have had oil go through th
e injector harness into the ECU, by the way you describe it,, very common for that to happen unless you have a modified harness. Plenty written in here about that !! Probably fried the ECU.Hope not.good luck you may be able to save it, by getting the top off and cleaning it with brake cleaner.

Thanks Fella's. Yes have been doing some work I have just sold it and have removed a dual battery system , a HF and UHF radio. They were connected via a buss bar under the front passenger seat and there was no arcing or sparking upon removal. I have pushed the fuel shutoff solenoid under the bonnet and it's ok.
I have taken the top off the ECU and there is no oil in it and very clean. There doesn't appear to be anything that has been hot inside of the unit. The next step if it is ok is to run a hot wire from the battery to the lug to excite the solenoid. Will I do any damage???????

Under your drivers seat there are 2 yellow relays near the fuse box. One is the fuel pump relay and the other controls all sorts of things, including supply to the fuel pump relay. This one was faulty in our 06 Defender.

The symptoms turn on the ignition and you and very occasionally couldn't hear the fuel pump, tap the relay and the pump came on. I replaced the relay and haven't had a problem since.
