Running a used Bosch alternator reverse rotation?

I've been running an 80 ah bosch integral reg alternator in reverse rotation with a modified cooling fan for about 2 years on my gen set for charging a bank of deep cycle batteries without problem. It finally died due to always having to work at maximum capacity. I've tried without success replacing it with several different 65 amp Bosch units, that although they work fine in normal rotation on my LandRover, just will not charge when in reverse rotation on the gen set. They just put out enough to extinguish the charge warning light, but no useful charge.I've Googled and there many people running alternators in reverse rotation without issue. Very little mention of the brushes developing a 'set' in one direction causing issues. I've noticed all the brushes on my various regulator units are worn off centre, although the mounting suggests they are mounted central to the slip rings. They obviously cock a little in their slides when running.
Would any electrically knowledgable members out there feel that this is my problem, and should filing the ends of the brushes square sort things out?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Bill.

Either replace the brushes with new ones or unsolder the existing ones and refit them the other way around. New brushes used to be around $3, now probably $8-10 from an auto electrician.

Also note the most common fault for Bosch alternators is regulator failure, try the reg out of the 65A unit in the 80A one and see if it goes.

Bosch made alternators for Commydores up to 130A from memory, it shouldn't be too hard to find a bigger capacity one around. Their BXU12121A is an universal 120A one made for agricultural machinery, and can rotate either way. They supply it without a fan, you refit yours.

Thanks.I've swapped regs around between 4 units without joy.The brushes all have a 'set'.
My current engine, a Briggs and Stratton 8hp would struggle to run anything higher than 80ah unless I double the diameter of the alternator pulley and run the engine at uncomfortably high rpm.Even the 80 when working at 1.25:1 pulley ratio will stall the engine if I hook up a discharged (11.6volts) battery.

    bill,

Early Honda Civic and Accord engines run in reverse rotation, their alternators run internal regs and are cheap as chips to buy.

Thanks Justin, I'll have a look at the wifes Civic when she gets home.
Gotta get sorted soon. running a Landy Isuzu 4BD1 engine to charge up my batteries isn't exactly economical.

That was a fatal mistake me telling you that! Robbing bits off the misses car can result in alll sorts of disharmony that I'd prefer NOT to be indirectly responsible for

Not as much disharmony as would result from informing her that she would have to do without her beloved TV and Internet for a couple of days
Seriously, after having a quick look under the bonnet, her alternator is very safe. my arthritus won't allow my wrists and fingers to twist and contort enough remove it. I'll go down to Pick a Part wreckers tomorrow and look for a Civic that has been dismantled enough to give reasonable access to the Alternator.

reverse rotation can upset the brushes, dont file them unless they are the stupid not symetrical cross section ones, just remove them from their housing in the brush pack and put them in backwards.

Yes they are a bit of a squeeze, timing belts aren't a doddle on them as they get newer and add A'C etc etc they get a bit tight to work in.

Why not change to a serpentine arrangement then you can select the side of the pulley you want the belt to run on making it all fwd rotation again and run any alt you want off it.
