Not an expert but you need to prime bare ally surfaces with etch primer. This gives the paint a key to stick to. Other than that, as far as I am aware, there is no difference and yes you can do it at home as many LR owners will tell you.

I understand that spraying aluminum panels involves a different process than steel panels. Can anyone explain the basic process and if it can be done at home?
Cheers

Hello from Brisbane.
An expert could give you a more professional answer, but the main difference is the need to apply a coat of etching primer to the bare aluminium panels before the main coats are applied. Once done it is pretty straighforward.
Most paint shops can advise you of what you will need - failing that a good boat outlet that sells or repairs painted ally hulls.
Cheers,
Cheers for that, does anyone have any tips for panel beating ali, I have a good dent in rear corner of roof which is going to be a mongrel to get out, does ali go hard like copper and crack easy?
cheers
